Can someone explain how to pulse herbals and what benefits it provides? Basically what is the reasoning behind pulsing. I just want to know what it does for you that is different from having medicine constantly.
Caught lyme June 2016.
Doxy March 2017 for 3 weeks.
Herbals on and off since.

Hi Ashleylynn,

Pulsing is intermittent dosing of herbs or antibiotics. Truthfully I didn't really understand the reason behind it so hoping others chime in here. I did pulse cystbusters 3 days on 4 days off (as opposed to continuous dosing) and I was told by my herbalist and llmd that you don't really need to be on cystbusters constantly.

It may be easier to only take certain antibiotics at certain times as well.

There are a lot of different thoughts on this so we will see who else can chime in. smile

The original approach to pulsing by Dr B and described in Pamela Weintraub's book "Cure Unknown" was to stop taking abx until your sx started to return as the Lyme bacteria changes out of cyst form to play again. Then restart abx to blast 'em hard. After several cycles of this you kill off more bacteria load than being on a steady state schedule. This was how Dr B got himself and Pam into remission. I think they were using Ceftin to do this.

I have been pulsing in various forms over my long treatment history. When I was on IV Rocephin I start out doing one a day every day. Then I changed to 4 days ON and 3 days OFF twice a day. I chose Tuesday thru Friday to have the weekend off and usually had my PICC bandage changed by home nurse on Monday.

Then I added pulsing TindaMax to my protocol taking it Monday and Tuesday night only and skipping the rest of the week.

For the past two years or so, I had been pulsing various abx combo protocols at 2 weeks ON and two weeks OFF. Last summer I decreased dose to 2 weeks ON and 3 weeks OFF. Each of the two times in past year that I dropped to 2 weeks ON and 4 weeks OFF I would back slide considerably, and return to 2 ON and 2 OFF until I recovered.

I think herbals should be taking all the time, and even at 3 to 4 times a day.

how's that sound?

Thank you for the information.

Okay what you are saying is that pulsing is more for pharmaceutical drugs and not really used for herbs. I'm asking because I'm looking at creating a better herbal regimen for myself and one that I can stick to long enough to go into remission.

I thought that I had read before about some people pulsing herbs, or changing the herbs they use after a certain amount of weeks. I guess everyone does different things which makes it so hard to really decide what to do sometimes.

To correct myself, some herbs do need to be pulsed like Arteminisin, so not to build up resistance. I'll let someone else more familiar with using it comment further. Its one of the only items I've never tried, except for it (or a derivative) being in the Rx drug Coartem, which I've taken several rounds for Babs.

Changing herbs is also beneficial. This is more commonly called rotation vs pulsing. I take NOW brand Candida Support which has handful of beneficial herbal ingredients. I rotate this with either Rx Diflucan or Nystatin to keep candida better in check. I use to also rotate Probiotics for the same reason.

Artemisinin shouldn’t be taken daily - but it’s not a whole herb.
It comes from Artemisia and that herb is taken daily.

With herbals you want to take daily and keep a steady state in your blood levels.

Another way to pulse abx - is the way Dr J does it - generally three days per week for two weeks on and followed by one or two weeks off.
