I'm just starting Biaxin (clarithromycin) today, and I was wondering about
others' experiences on it. In particular, I was wondering about
any side effects I should be aware of? The LLMD said that some people get sleep disturbances on it, and I've read a few alarming anecdotes here and there online.
I've done doxycycline and tetracycline in the past (not at the same time) and didn't have any bad side effects from either. I was really careful about
taking probiotics, etc., to try to keep stomach issues to a minimum.
Also, I'd be interested in whether you thought Biaxin was effective. I have joint pain that the LLMD thinks is probably Bartonella, and I'm wondering if Biaxin can be effective for that.
(I posted a similar inquiry a while back -- sorry to be somewhat repetitive.) Thank you!
Started herbal treatment for Lyme in early 2017. Currently doing pulsed tetracycline with LLMD. Positive Lyme test (IgM); also tested positive for bartonella. Uncertain about
diagnosis because my symptoms (dry eyes/mouth, finger joint pain/swelling) look like classic autoimmune issues, and rheumatologist strongly rejects possibility that they are caused by Lyme.

I've been in it for 6 months with no issues. I have heard that Clarithromycin can be harsh on your gut flora so my doc has me on 10 billion probiotics before bed every night

Since clarithromycin is part of the macrolide class I would watch out for heart issues. Check the FDA warning for macrolides.

LongQT syndrome is a risk for macrolides....
you can get an ECG done to test.

I did have an EKG done before starting the clarithromycin. The LLMD said that my QT intervals (I think?) were great for purposes of this antibiotic and that she wouldn't expect me to have issues.
I took my first dose yesterday, with food. My stomach felt weird within 20 minutes or so, and I had a metallic taste in my mouth within an hour. Later, my stomach was all bloated -- I looked like I was suddenly 5 months pregnant. So I think this is going to be harder on my stomach than doxycycline or tetracycline. I'll be careful to do probiotics, I guess.

It def hit my head symptoms hard, certainly an effective drug for me. I got that metallic taste as well. Good luck, I hope you don't run into too many issues with your stomach.

Probiotics can also cause some significant bloating.
