"In the U.S. - everyone gets a certain amount of $$ coming in from the governement, right when they reach 65 yo? Regardless of your employment history?"
Gov health care - medicare doesn't cover all of it though. And who wants to wait till 65, many die before that.
Many downsize/retire younger 55-60 and cant afford $500-800 per month for heathcare.
No one hires old people for real jobs that pay good.
So that's what you have to pay? yikes...who can afford that when they are retired.....
re: hiring old people. I find that has been slowly changing over the years....especially since birthdate isn't put on resumes anymore.....so it's not always easy to tell if someone is 55 or late 40's.
Maybe a 55 year old won't be hired for a laboring job...but if it's more cerebral and they come well decorated...with credentials and experience...
My husband is in the 5th decade of his life now...and most think he's in his 40's.....lol...He did a career change about
5 years ago and has worked out well so far. (he was forced into it - when the local mill closed.)
But, if you're talking about
going back to school....who can afford that when you're in your 50's?
That would be very difficult....unless you can continue to work while going to school....
