I have a sinus infection. Since I'm allergic to the first two choices of abx, I was put on doxy for a week. It has helped but it's definitely not gone and the week is almost over. (I'll go back.) Makes me worry about developing resistent side infections due to being on abx so long (20 months so far). I was on doxy for months at the beginning and then the related minocycline for more than a year.

This is actually something I was worried about before even beginning treatment. Has it been an issue for anyone? Tell me this will go away, lol.

Hi Dahlias. I had 3 sinus infections last year and get them every year. Abx resistance is a big concern as I notice it getting tougher and tougher to get rid of these infections. Amoxicillin, Augmentin and Biaxin all don't work anymore which is a big concern. I had to resort to using Levaquin until it started to hit my Achilles tendon.

Can you take Bactrim? That worked for me last month.

Thanks for responding! I'm afraid to take Bactrim as I had a very unpleasant reaction to a different sulfa drug. I've had bad reactions to many abx. There's not much left that I feel safe taking.

Hi, Dahlias:

Here's a product that I'd recently found, while searching online for something to help me with sinus issues. Does this seem like something that might be safe and effective for you?

http://seagateproducts.com/product/241/olive-leaf-nasal-spray-1-oz.html

The product seems to have quite a few positive reviews.

After spending the weeks of Christmas and New Year hammered by a bad cold, I had lingering sinus issues. I could smell the sickness when inhaling and I kept discharging "gunk" when blowing my nose.

In such previous cases, a NeilMed Sinus Rinse (http://shop.neilmed.com/products/sinus-rinse) had helped quite a lot. It wasn't a panacea, but several sinus flushes a day really helped mobilize the "gunk" in my sinuses and helped relieve some of the pressure in my face and ears. This time, though, it did nothing.

Over the following days, I made multiple trips to Whole Foods Market to buy (and return) various "Cold & Flu" products that did nothing for me. Several days later, by the time I found the above nasal spray, thankfully, my sinuses were finally clearing-out and the pressure in my face and ears was diminishing.

Since the nasal spray product was going to take several days for delivery, I didn't buy it. The next time, though, I plan to try it and the throat spray.

I hope you find something that provides relief.

Sincerely,
Dude

I don't know but - if you're taking the abx for lyme and co's for a long time...and then you get an infection (unrelated) - ie strep throat...or sinus infection) - and you now treat it with one of the abx you used for lyme...won't it be "new" to the infection (ie strep throat ...or sinus infection in your case) ?
So, it won't be resistant to those lyme and co's meds?

Again...I don't know...just been thinking about this.

Dude, thank you, those look like good products. I ordered both of them. I would much rather deal with it locally than rely on more oral abx.

Girlie, that does make sense.

I use a neti pot and Alkalol nasal rinse, it's like snorting a line of crushed Altoids.

By the way, Dahlias, the following is very important, when it comes to the quality of the water used in the NeilMed Sinus Rinse kits. (The only exception would be a NeilMed kit that's pre-filled from the manufacturer.)

"NeilMed has learned about recent news and internet articles concerning the improper use of unfiltered or contaminated tap water with neti pots. We emphasize that, when used as directed, NeilMed's nasal wash devices are safe, affordable and effective to use. NeilMed's directions of use have always stressed the importance of using clean and previously boiled water, distilled water or filtered water through a 0.2 micron filter for nasal irrigation. Our product brochure instructions clearly note that using tap water is not recommended. Please do not use tap or faucet water when using NeilMed's nasal wash devices. If you always use distilled, previously boiled or filtered water through a 0.2 micron filter for nasal rinsing with a Neti Pot; there is no cause for concern. NeilMed also provides a protocol for disinfecting NeilMed nasal irrigation devices. Please follow the protocol."

Source: http://www.neilmed.com/usa/directions-for-use.php

This information should also appear in the NeilMed product literature that will accompany the item you purchased. So, please be sure to read the full instructions first, prior to using the device. I don't mean to sound fanatical, but it's critically important to use water that's safe.

Sincerely,
Dude

The Seagate product looks interesting. I wonder if it's the preservative in it that does the killing. It's the same substance that was found in grapefruit seed extract after all the processing of it. So far nothing I've tried prevents them including Sinuorega and Xlear. Maybe I'll give this a shot. Thanks Dude for the suggestion. Hope it works for you Dahlias!

From what I read sinus infection can also be fungal, not just bacterial (perhaps because of long-term use of antibiotics yeast problems start to develop?), and in this case GSE should help. My mom uses neti pot rinse with GSE added and it helps every time, but she also adds a drop of essential oil as some forum members recommended to me for my sinus problems (thieves, thyme, oregano(burns), cinnamon..).

Stubborn sinus infection can also be caused by dental problems (infections deep in the jaw that are not necessarily painful, cysts etc).

Dude, I've read about that and already picked up distilled water -- thank you!

Zimica, really interesting points. I've been feeling like yeast is becoming an issue, and I also have a spot in my upper jaw that we've been watching for possible infection. Will up the GSE and look into adding EOs to the nasal rinse.

Dahlias,

How are things with your sinus infection? Have you received any of the items you recently ordered? Or, are they still in transit?

Wishing you much success and healing,
Dude

Dude, they have arrived. I was out all day yesterday but plan to try the sinus rise in the morning and then the olive leaf one. I happened to have the olive leaf one with me Friday afternoon when I took my daughter to her functional/integrative LLMD (grabbed the mail and went). I asked the LLMD about it, and she said it's a good product.

The infection is much better, but I still feel a little pressure/ irritation/ gunk. I am really looking forward to trying this stuff. (Taking a few more days of doxy too. Really don't want a resistant infection a few inches from my brain.)

Thank you! Wishing you success and health too.

Will update soon.

Serra or natto (active thread) is good at clearing up sinus issues and goes after viruses/bio films ect. Goggle both.

I had pretty bad sniffles Friday, already gone today, no full blown cold developed at all.

I'll read more about that, astroman. I'm cautious about taking nattokinase because I gave myself a huge flare with it back at the beginning, but I could take it more than I do. And I don't know much about serrapeptase.

Dude, I finally used the NeilMed sinus rinse. It's not fun but I feel so degunkified. This must be good for preventing infection since there's less stuff just sitting there. I'm definitely a convert -- thank you!!

Hi, Dahlias:

Oh, that's great! I'm really happy to hear you've been able to degunkify yourself! Though, I agree it's no fun. I'm also glad you took some additional Doxycycline, for the reason you cited. Don't play with fire!

Wishing you the best,
Dude

I agree with The Dude Abides, it's very important to have distilled water and to clean the netipot.

Dahlia did your Lyme also start with a sinus infection by any chance? Mine did.

I read somewhere that when you start to get better, that you run back through all your old symptoms again.

Good grief - I hope not.
That would be about 30 symptoms for me... some have been gone for over two years.... I don’t want to see them again!!

Rainy, mine didn't start with a sinus infection. This is just a bonus, lol.

Thanks, Dude!
