Background: Dr. J switched me from Babesia focussed protocol to Persisters/Bartonella in August. Wanted me to do 6 cycles. (each cycle being 4 weeks)
Week 1 consists of Dapsone/Daraprim/Rifabutin plus a couple of other abx.
Week 2 consists of Rifabutin plus a couple others.
Weel 3 and Week 4 - off except Alinia for 5 days in those two weeks.
Ever since then, i've had bad kidney function tests GFR going below 60 (range = above 60) and Creatinine above 90 (range is 45-90)
At first I thought it was the D and D....and then later on suspected Rifabutin...but wasn't sure.
When I spoke to Dr. J in December (phone appt) I was on cycle 4 - he said to do the 2 more cycles of persisters and then move to a "Maintenance " protocol which included Rifabutin plus 2 abx which I would be on for several months.
I did do one more cycle of persister protocol...in December, and then decided in January instead of doing the last cycle, I did the Maintenance protocol...as I wanted to find out if it was the Rifabutin or the D and D causing the lowered kidney function.
Doing the persister protocol wouldn't tell me anything since D and D along with Rifabutin are all in the protocol.
So...Last week I did the Maintenance protocol (Rifabutin/Ceftin/Minocycline) on M/W/F.
I tested the kidneys today. drum roll.........GFR is 74 and Creatinine is 78 YES!!!
It's not the Rifabutin....it's the Dapsone and/or Daraprim causing the kidney issues.
Bonus is - my kidneys bounced back quickly.
So I don't have to worry that my 'Maintenance" protocol will be harming my kidneys - or having to find a different med to take instead of the rifabutin...
Now the decision to make - do I do that last persister protocol with the D and D even though it is hard on the kidneys?
I am so happy about
this....as I think the Rifabutin is helping me......
