Thanks JB I look forward to reading it. I need some good news.
The NYTimes had another crummy one shared yesterday that was linked to from their morning update claiming to be a sympathetic yet balanced view which was a really depressing piece trying to stereotype lyme patients. It was on The Cut - a website I’ve never heard of - I won’t even link it here.
I really disliked that piece, one of my close friends sent it to me because she thought it was a fair overview and compassionate. Personally I found it to be an absolutely condescending cross-examination of patients, and maybe would've found it more palatable if the cross-examination had been applied the other side: those who are treating and failing all these patients, and what are their responsibilities, accountability for the situation, issues with groupthink which are blinding them, and various other conflicting factors/conflicts of interest. The patients are blamed for still being ill, and people call them crazy for seeking solutions when the medical establishment leaves them for dead.
A basic question is why are so many patients with this disease condition turning to alternative options (at scale!), in my view that simple fact is a slamming indictment of the failing paradigm of care set by the IDSA/CDC. Patients are desperately seeking support and help when the medical establishment has completely abandoned them, and often times loved ones abandon them because the establishments emphasizes that these patients are psychosomatic, lazy, etc, which puts patients in a very difficult spot of having to justify and legitimize their own condition without any corroborating help from the medical authorities.
It drives me a bit crazy, the patients are the easy target, whereas the more important question is why are there so many patients with the same conditions for whom the medical system is failing? that is the most obvious question that should be asked. Why are the responsible and accountable holders of power in these situations not being cross-examined? why is it the group of people that are suffering and in desperate need of help, why is it that group that always gets shredded in media?
