The fact that scientific journals refuse to accept papers that run against the established narrative (in this case, that it evolved in nature, which is still not proven mind you), and the fact that twitter can use lack of peer-review to "censor" someone, is scary. .
Was this paper refused by a scientific journal? I figured it got posted to Zenado to avoid peer review.
Not to mention, I dont even understand how the origin of this thing got so politicized. I normally agree with your posts Potsnpans, but I dont get your criticism of Tucker's "not clear" comment. He used it as a turn of phrase, and it was pretty clear what HE meant.
We know which political party in the US would most like to push this whole thing on China, and there surely are many people of Chinese origin who would like to damage the Chinese Communist Party in any way possible.. well the Wikipedia article made it pretty clear to me that politics are behind the paper, more so than science. The Rule of Law Foundation has not previously published any scientific or medical research. It was created by a billionaire Chinese exile at odds with the Chinese Communist Party, and is (was?) headed by Steve Bannon.
As for my criticism of Tucker Carlson.. Ok I admit it isn’t clear why Twitter suspended Dr. Li-Meng Yan's account.. but it's entirely clear why principled media outlets haven’t given her a platform. She has no inside information about
this, just this sketchy research paper that was.. (from Angela Rasmussen in the Wikipedia article):
"basically all circumstantial and some of it entirely fictional". For example the paper asserts that SARS-CoV-2 has a "unique" furin cleavage site in its protein structure "completely absent in this particular class of coronaviruses found in nature"; however Rasmussen says that many coronaviruses, including the 2012 MERS coronavirus, have these sites and that hence "This proves exactly nothing."
..and for Tucker Carlson to act like these reasons for "ignoring" her don't exist.. for him not to bring any of them up in his interview.. that is what I was calling "incredibly irresponsible".
I think what's being forgotten with this paper (and with the one gfields cited), is that researchers are usually the intended audience for pre-prints. I’m afraid the intended audience for this paper was really us.. the general public. Do you ever recall seeing a scientist on TV discussing findings that have not been peer reviewed? ...and when Tucker ends the interview in the way he did (paraphrasing) “Wow can you believe what she just said, ladies and gentlemen? I sure hope the media covers/scrutinizes this."
...You're the media! You're supposed to be doing that job right now! Of course Tucker Carlson is not dumb. I’m pretty sure he knew what he was doing there.
Is it a stretch to think that they would have taken a virus and bioengineered it in a bioweapons laboratory?
The "stretch" would be to say that sars-cov-2 is a bioweapon. I don't think anyone has said it's not possible for it to be a bioweapon, or a virus modified for other research purposes and accidentally released.. we just need evidence. I don't like being monkeyed around with whether it's by Mike Pompeo, or by Steve Bannon and a Chinese exile.
potsnpans - You say you're not finding anything in the links that I posted. What is it that you were looking for exactly?
Evidence. At the top of your post you said "There is a lot of literature out there that this is a human-made virus."
Why do you think this scientific report was taken down by its authors?
It wasn’t actually “taken down”. The full text can still be viewed at biorxiv.org. I already posted the reason that was given for the authors’ withdrawal, but here it is again:
“This paper has been withdrawn by its authors. They intend to revise it in response to comments received from the research community on their technical approach and their interpretation of the results. If you have any questions, please contact the corresponding author."
If there’s any legitimate evidence in this and/or in the other paper, I just don’t see how the scientific community could collectively decide on a cover up, let alone execute one.
After all, what would the consequences be if China did, in fact, create a genetically modified virus that initiated a world-wide pandemic? Are we allowed to ask that question?
We can ask it all day long. The problem is that it hasn’t been answered, and some are trying to make it seem as if it has, at least partially been answered.
