Hi everyone, I have been looking into something to help with my feelings of depersonalization. I just came across some information about taurine. Has anyone tried this supplement before? I read that it can help reduce glutamate in your brain and that it often helps with spacey/disoriented anxiety and distress. Any feedback on if this is worth me giving it a try would be helpful. Thanks so much.

I'm taking Taurine - ala Dr. J.

He also has me taking magnesium, Curcumin, and Quercetin.

Is it helping? Maybe...lol. My short term memory has improved some lately. Thank goodness because I'm at a fairly new job...and I need to remember things I'm told...

It's in a lot of energy drinks, such as monster energy and red bull.

You might want to recall if those drinks ever helped you feel better, if you ever drink them that is.

Thank you both for your input. Girlie the combo that Dr. j has you on seems like a good combo, did you have any side effects when starting them? I am glad to hear that you are back to work, I hope to get there one day. Rainycloud, that is interesting about taurine being in energy drinks, I have not had one in a long time but I should try one and see how I feel!

I'm a little foggy on this myself - but I think balance brain function relies on the balance of glutamate and GABA
there are supplements like Theanine ( from green tea) that can help boost GABA - and that may be worth trying - as it's generally v well tolerated.

the recent thread here on Lyme and the microbiome - link to an article claiming that there is a shift in the microbiome of Lyme patients that shows significantly reduced populations of a group of bacteria that are responsible for making most of our GABA and hence people with Lyme are prone to depression etc

i am waiting for some properly published research - but if it pans out it could be of therapeutic benefit to either restore the balance or to supplement with GABA or its precursors.

No side effects from the supplements. But I never do.

Check out what else is in the energy drinks before you drink one.
Aren’t they high in sugar?

I took Taurine for a few months. No difference. I'm not saying it doesn't work....everyone is different! I think the Bartonella and lyme did so much damage to my brain. I just entered Bartonella treatment 2 months ago and I'm having a rough time with abx. I'll certainly think about taking the Taurine again later on down the road.

I read up on many energy drinks avail in the last 20 + years - hard to believe Red Bull has been in the US since the mid to late 90's and others followed.

I used them in competition (helped a lot) but also needed them to function daily with lyme brain. One 8oz was all I could handle with out adverse affects of over stimulation/hyperness.

Some have more sugar than others, all have B vitamins, most have caffine, some a lot. The Five minute Energy shot bottles dont do much for me and dont have Tuarine either (!).

****>>>The ones that gave me a calm energetic focus had Tuarine (Red Bull and copies).<<<***

**Red Bull brand has no more caffeine than an 8oz office!!!! yep, true. ***

Monster and a couple others felt more like a caffeine jolt (bad!)

**The sugar free Red Bull worked just as good as the sugar for me. So I usually went with the sugar free one. **

Ive not had a Red Bull or similar drink in two years, I dont need them as much and I dont process B6 well, so it builds up in me (blood tested). .

5-10 years ago I also used Taurine capsules (1000mg) in search of something healthier than energy drinks. Unfortunately they were not as nearly effective for me.

So now I just have tea or sugar free caffeinated soda for a afternoon pick me up if Im tired on work days.

As far as "Depersonalization" , ive seen that on this forum before and not sure what that even means.

I had brain fog and was even lethargic some years (spaced out staring at walls ect). To me lethargy was almost like being slightly asleep but standing with eyes still open.

Thank you everyone for chiming in. Astroman depersonalization is hard to explain but the best descintion that I could find online is Depersonalization/derealization is a mental state where you feel detached from your surroundings, People and objects may seem unreal and you may feel as if you are in a dream but you are highly aware that this altered state in not normal. It is a odd horrible feeling and I do gave good days amd bad days but this is the symptom that I would like to get rid of most.

Depersonalization - had this for the first time starting this Spring (no, it was not the “2020” syndrome...lol). Had I not read about it before I would have not recognized it in myself. It certainly is strange, and scary at times. In particular, the times I was driving (only short distances) I had to triple check myself that the traffic light is green or red, etc., and that my travels really were real and not just a dream. So strange. After a few months it stopped - I don’t know why/how. At one point I did try Taurine supplements (for some reason I read somewhere) but did not really find a benefit and stopped.

I am a good 3 months into my Lyme & Co tinctures protocol and feel marginally better overall. I had forgotten about the depersonalization episodes until now, so I guess that is another improvement. All the best.

My very first Lyme symptom was Depersonilization. What helps me the most is Lamotrigine (Lamictal). It's made a world of difference. Lamotrigine is the standard for Dp/Dr. That's if you want to go the medication route

Thanks everyone for the help. JP, I have heard good things about lamotrigine, what dose are you on amd did you have any side effects when starting it? The one thing I worry about besides the costs is that this medication said it interferes with folate absorption amnd I already have a double MTHFR mutation, do you think it would make my mutation symptoms worse?

I take 200 mg daily. You have to ramp up Lamotrigine really slow because one of the side effects can be rare deadly rash. That's only if you ramp it up to fast though. I've been on Lamotrigine for 10 years and I haven't personally expierenced and side effects. I don't know if you have insurance but with my insurance I only pay $1.50 per prescription. Without insurance however the cost can get into the hundreds 😔

Hey CalmLittleBuddha, was curious if you tried taurine? Spent a while reading about it, and it does sound like its supposed to lower glutamate and increase gaba. Yet when i read about the reviews on amazon, some people say it slows them down and others say it amps them up and they cant sleep. was curious about your experience?

Thanks for that info jp. Dcd, I have not tried taurine yet, I don't like adding in too much at one time, I am Deciding between taurine and yucca. I will let you know if the one I pick helps. Have you tried magnesium fir your vestibular migraines? I used to take magnesium citrate but switched to Glycinate and

Magnesium I take and doesnt seem to really help. I will try to get some taurine and try. I took some yucca yesterday, nothing yet. Yucca really helps w/ the ammonia, not the glutamate from what I can tell. I tried some yesterday and woke up worse, so far. These things are awful.

Holeinmyhead, I just noticed your post now, I'm glad you aren't experiencing depersonalization anymore, it is awful. What tinctures are you on? Dcd, do you know how to tell the difference between high ammonia or high glutamate?

I may ask to have my blood ammonia checked. My understanding is that it should be regulated pretty well by the liver and kidneys, but if you have a urea cycle deficiency or start consuming tons of meat it can get out of whack.

dcd- Not all mag is the same.

Mag glycinate is best. It will make yo tired though, thus, I take 400mg (2tabs) before bed.

Tuarine tablets dont seem to do much vs the tuarine in a redbull or a copy of redbull. I read an article about this one time - its been studied as people try to duplicate the feel with supps.

I was taking mag glycinate - until Dr J told me to take mag threonate.

“ Magnesium threonate is one of the most bioavailable forms of magnesium and specifically for improving magnesium levels in the brain Developed by a Chinese scientist at UCLA [, magnesium threonate is a combination of the mineral magnesium with a chelating agent called L-threonate.“

Can’t find the link to my source now...

girlie, did you notice any positive affect when you changed to theronate? And Astroman, how much magnesium Glycinate do you take per day? I have heard good things about magnesium theronate but it is so expensive, Dose anyone know if mixing forums of magnesium would still be beneficial? I could try one Glycinate, one citrate amd one theronate per day to lower the costs?

2 caps at bedtime of KAL 200mg, so 400mg total.

Its $12-15 for 90 count bottle of 200mg.

Cant take mag close time to Rx meds though, its a sponge.

Helps sleep, and AM regularity too.

Taken daytime and Ill get tired.

During periods of anxiety, I did take one in the daytime, the other at night.
