Hi everyone - I'm new here just thought I'd introduce myself. I am a Systems Administrator from Atlanta, GA. I was diagnosed with migraines when I was 4 yrs old. I have been getting them ever since. I have been through more medication trying to find relief, all with no success. I was going to a Neurologist for a while and her last resort was botox... I had to stop seeing her for insurance purposes. The foods that trigger migraines for me are excessive caffeine, although i need caffeine to prevent one (ironic eh?) and mozzarella cheese. Other things that trigger my migraines are oversleeping, hitting my head even slightly, a lot of gum chewing, and strong flowery smells such as perfume. I'm glad to have found an active group because I am willing to try new techniques... unlike medicine I can do multiple techniques if one doesnt work. When I was trying new medicine if it didnt work i was SOL until i was able to take something else. Anyway... my migraines have slowed to 4 or so a month, before it was 2-4 times a week. things that changed: started a job that was the same hrs m-f and stopped smoking. This was about 2 yrs ago, but I still struggle with them. I have had a LOT of time to come up with techniques that help me when I have a migraine. These are what I do
1) take a hot shower and let the water just run on my head for as long as I can stand it, or until I get too nauseous.
2) sit up, laying down makes mine worse!
3) play a relaxing story in my head... when I was young my mother got me a relaxation tape on the suggestion of my doctor. I have since lost the tape but I know it by heart so I just play it in my head...
