Hi everyone. I'm new here, usually on the Crohn's Disease board.

I've suffered from migraine for many years. Runs heavily in my family. My Mother gets them weekly, if not sometimes daily. I've also had occular migraines for many years. Usually just a few times a year. The first one I can remember having back when I was 14 or so. They usually only lasted around 10-15 minutes. Sometimes I get a headache with them, sometimes it's just the visual symptoms.

Well in September I had an episode of having a dark spot in my vision that lasted 24 hours. I really didn't think much of it, since it went away. Well I'm having another episode this week, only this is day 3 of having that same dark spot. In the same area of the same eye. I saw my eye doctor yesterday, who did a complete eye exam. Dialated eyes and all. Everything looked, in his words, perfect. He said he believed it was migraine related, and that yes it can last this long. But to call him if it continued on through this week.

I'm a bit freaked out now. Thoughts of tumors, strokes (even though I have no other symptoms), and lord only knows what else going through my mind. I have an appointment with my regular doctor tomorrow. Thinking maybe I need an MRI or referral to a neurologist?

Just wondering if anyone else has any experience with this, especially prolonged auras? I just can't see how this is okay. cry Just looking for some reassurance I guess until I can get some answers.

Hi,

I've had usual auras that lasted for hours. I've also had symptoms for a day or 2 before I get a full blown aura or migraine, such as nausea, vomiting, feeling spacy, etc.

Many years ago, with my first migrainous episode, I got what I now know is an aura, then I started losing my vision. I also got total black spots around my eyes. It got so that I had like tunnel vision. It was all black to the sides, and up and down. I could only see things in a small area directly in front of me. I can't remember how long it lasted, but it wasn't that long. However, it did scare me. I had no insurance, but did go see an opthalmologist, as I thought I had something wrong with my eyes. They did their tests and everything checked out okay...nothing wrong with my eyes. However, the doc told me then that it was possible I might have had a migraine without headache. They suggested that I should see a neurologist or neuro ophthalmologist. But I just couldn't afford it, so I never went. I've had some more episodes over the years where I got black spots and I usually get ear ringing at the same time.

I certainly have no idea what really happened as I couldn't have it thoroughly checked out...but if you can afford it or have insurance, I think you probably should see a neurologist and maybe get an MRI just to be sure. After a lot of researching on my own, it seems that some migraines/strokes can have similar symptoms. But to reassure you...my first episode occured approximately 18 years ago and I'm still here and still have my vision, etc. So hopefully it is nothing serious.

Thanks for the response! I appreciate it. I'm having a hard time getting answers from these doctors that I have. My doc felt the spot I was seeing was a just a floater. It went away so I stopped worring about it. However this week I've had two episodes of the typical aura that I get. The shimmering zig zag spot. The one I had on Monday only lasted the typical 10-15 minutes and was gone. No biggie. Well this morning I had one spot after another, for an hour. I've read an hour is common, and not something to worry about. However I'm not sure that after one "spot" has moved off to the side, that it's okay for another one to appear. It all seemed part of the same episode, just back to back. It stopped after an hour, and now I do have a headache. I called my doc to see what he thought (he gets aura too, so really told me to not worry about it at my appointment last week). They would see me today, but since it stopped I just cancelled the appointment. After the way he talked last week, I know he wouldn't be concerned with it only lasting the hour.

I just wonder if getting new "spots" within the hour is really okay or not. If it comes back today I may just go in to urgent care. They have ct-scan capabilities.
