I will try not to ramble...please bare with me. I am a 36 year old female. January 08 I woke up to an excruciating headache...for the first time in my life NOTHING helped. I ended up in the ER and was hospitalized with every test under the sun ordered for me. All...negative...which was good....but as you all know....not SO good...as nothing to diagnose...nothing to help treat! mad At any rate I have tried every triptan, anti-depressant, anti-convulsive, muscle relaxer, and pain med under the sun (yes also imitrex, maxalt, and the new imitrex with naproxen...also went to the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago last September and was hospitalized with a DHE45 IV for 5 days...this helped then...but unfortunately when I returned the headaches found their way back into my head.
When these first started I was a medicated-zombie....little did I know after being out of work on Short Term Dis. for so long they replaced me and I then became unemployed as well.... confused But quite frankly, when you feel like hell, losing a job at the time was o.k....as the stress with trying to get better so I could get back to work I think was a HUGE trigger for my headaches.
At any rate, here I am a year and a half later trying to rebuild my life ....rebuild my energy...while still having chronic daily headaches. To date I am on 40 mg of celexa in the morn and 25 mg of amitryptiline at bedtime. My doc now just ordered flexeril to try to see if these will tamper down these daily headaches. I am all too familiar with rebound headaches...and I am not over-doing it on OTC meds at all. What I'm wondering is has anyone else experienced these daily chronic headaches? If so, what has helped you? Any glimmer of hope or experience on the subject would be GREATLY appreciated.  I like so many of you in this chat room just want one thing in life....and that is to get MY LIFE BACK!!

Krista,

First of all, I am so deeply sorry for the pain you are suffering. I have had headaches for over 10 years. I thought I was "doing life" for quite awhile, but since August of 2008, I have had all sorts of tests done, also. All say "I am fine!" I am retired, but not old. I retired at age 57 from teaching high school and saw many of my young teenagers suffering far worse than I was. Tomorrow, I am headed to a Neurologist. Let's hope, he/she can figure out what is wrong. In the last week, I was told I had High Cholesterol, my kidney level had spiked, and they found a Malignant Melanoma. I had surgery on Friday and and all went well. Yet, I am so dizzy that I can barely walk. I cry and then my headache worsens!
Keep in touch! Let's compare notes!

I will keep you, as well as all people in pain, in my prayers! I do hope God will hear me!
Linda

In my honest opinion, you should keep a diary of everything you eat and drink and when your chronic headaches start. Look for anything in common. Also, I think you need a neurologist. Arthritis can even cause miraines. Also research the medications you are on by calling a pharmastist and seeing what the side effects are.

Linda, how was your appt with the neuro?

Krista - my wife 27 is in a very similar situation as you. Her's started Feb 2005 9 months after her first job, one she loved, and was forced to quit. I actually had to help her quit because she did not want to leave the job, but looking back on it, it was the right decision, there is no way she would have been able to work with this daily head pain. I could go through the laundry list of things we have tried, but I'll just tell you about some of them that somewhat helped, if for only a short period of time, it brought her pain down to a 2 or 3 instead of the 6 to 8 it is usually. I am sure you know the 1 - 10 scale...

Lidocaine - we had to go to philly for this since there arent too many places that will do it, but she was on this IV drip for 3 weeks and was better for a while after that, maybe 6 months of 2 to 3 pain level?

methergine - Unfortunately this one worked the best but at high levels and she needed to stop it after 6 months because prolonged exposure isnt good for the heart.

acupuncture - it isnt nearly as good as the others mentioned but when ever she comes home from an appointment she seems to have more energy

Since your story sounds allot like my wife's please do update me if you find something that works or helps....

Hi Krista...

How are you feeling now?

Have you done any research to see which headache "types" seem to fit you? I think the first thing is to figure out what's going on and then how to treat.

Have you tried accupuncture? chiropractic? physical therapy?

The diary is a great idea so you can watch for patterns. Please update and I will be racking my brain for anything I can think that might be a step in the right direction!

Terbor-

I can only imagine how hard it is to be the partner of someone who suffers with daily head pain, my husband is great like you are...he is always watching and listening for anything that might help.

Thanks for your information!

Thank you all so very much for your replies. I like many out there have days where it seems like I am the only one in the world that is living in this not so "liveable" way. It's frustrating when you think you're climbing back up the ladder to good health...then out of the blue another slip....and I find myself back down at the bottom only to try to find the strength to re-climb again.

I try so very hard to push myself forward and "pretend" I feel fine to my family and friends....when inside I am trying my hardest not to fall over and cry.....I find myself just EAGERLY waiting until "at least" 7 pm so I can lay down to rest because "I'm tired"...and not really tell people that "I feel horrible and can't BARE to stand up or be awake for another second!"

I get so annoyed with the fact that I can't be healthy after all this time that I can't even IMAGINE what others are thinking when they hear that "I'M SICK".

WHY?????WHY????WHY????WHY???? can't I just be HEALTHY??? ARGH...thank you all for listening....I'm obviously not having a very good day...

Healthy Wishes!!

I have had HORRIBLE headaches all day long everyday since February 1st. I took the Topamax, did the CT, Fioricet, different doctors etc.

I am now seeing a naturopath out of Cumming Ga. I am not completely fixed yet but in the last two weeks (with only two visits) he has drastically changed my life. It usually takes 4 visits before people are completely well.

The website is if you are interested. Maybe you can find someone in your area that does the same techniques and using the same instruments. Good Luck!
