My 10 year old daughter had her first migraine last week.  It started with distorted vision followed by severe pain behind one eye and then vomitting.  Today, she had another.  It was so severe she was screaming with pain.  This also started with vision distortion.  She then vomitted violently (which was green).  Then she had numbness in her left hand and the left of her face.  I have suffered for the same type of migraine since the onset of puberty when I was 15 and I think that is what is triggering it for her too as she has shown other signs of early puberty.  I would like to ask anyone else whose children have suffered from this if there is anything preventative other than drugs which I could give her, or, anything not drug related I could give her to ease the pain during this.  Alternatively, could anyone advise me on safe drugs for children.

Thanks   June D

Poor kid....this happened to me too...when I was 12. I never vomited but the pain in my head was so severe...I was put on Ergomar ( spell?) because that's all they had in the 70's and early 80's....the point is - I took adult medication....that's all that would work ( and not that well)...you could try Excedrin Migraine but it looks like your daughter's headaches are far too painful for that to work. The other suggestion would be to go to a compounding pharmacist so that they can take the medicine of choice and put it into something that she could take under the tongue...usually the dosage is smaller but can be absorbed quickly. I have a pharmacist whose wife suffers from migraines but also has a heart condition...she cannot take the full strength medication because one of the side effects is that it could be hard on the heart. But taking a smaller dosage in a better way....did the trick. You could try that. Good luck.

Hi I am fairly new to the forum, I am usually in the Lupus and Fibromyalgia forums. But this last Friday my son was diagnosed as having migraines. His pediatrician put him on a med call periactin to help prevent the migraines, and she wants him back in a month and at that time she said she would prescribe a med that he could take when he felt a headache coming on. He will be 10 in less than 2 weeks, but he is definatley showing physical and mental signs of puberty. i agree this has something to to with it. I too had migraines as a young teen til I was about 20. I am almost 36 now and I feel like they are starting to come back, so I thnk stress is also a big trigger as well. Any thoughts or ideas would be welcomed thanks

June also i am experiencing the left arm numbness and face as well too, so maybe there is something to it? I dont remember vomiting viloently as a teen, but my son has been, after several weeks of this occuring 2 or 3 times week, and the school calling me on friday I new something was going on so i took him in to the doctor, where she asked us both many quetions, and then she deternied from what he described that he was having migraines, she asked him to also keep a headache diary too. to help see the triggers. Hope you get some answers too, take care...
