Hi. I’m Dana and I’m 27. I’ve had migraine since I was 16 and have been treating the pain by using fioricet. Me and my husband, married for 2 years now, are planning to have a baby this year but am worried that the drug I take might hurt our baby. Do you know of any possible complications that fioricet may cause to an unborn baby? Thanks for the help.

Congratulations Dana. There had been no reports of fioricet causing any harm to an unborn child. I checked the web for it and asked a doctor friend. But of course, a doctor’s checkup or consultation will be necessary for further info.

I too suffer from migraines and have since I was 13.  For some people, (Me included, when I was pregnant, my migraines  became less frequent.)  I took Fioricet as well, and have a beautiful, healthy baby girl.  She is now 8 months old and my migraines are becoming more severe and frequent.  I had to stop nursing her and go back on my daily preventative medications.   My OBGYN prescribed the Fioricet for me, and said that it was about the only thing that was safe to take.  There is really nothing you can take daily to prevent... only treat the ones you get. I did go to the ER about 4 times during my pregnancy for treatment for migraines while I was pregnant.  I got IV pain medication and nausea meds.  Those were also safe for my baby, so there is no reason to suffer if you do get a migraine that you can't control.... Plus the stress of being in pain is not good for your growing baby.. so go get it treated if you need to!

I hope you have good luck getting pregnant, and lets hope your migraines slow or stop for 9 months!

I have had migraines for 27 years. I have tried so many meds I have forgotten their names...
I also have chronic back pain due in part to a car accident in 2005.  I have also been diagnosed with facet disease which was aggravated by the accident and started the flare up.  3 bulging discs to the left.  Lower back pain that goes into my right butt cheek and down right leg to my knee....
Currently taking oxycodone and having repeat injections in my facets and nerve ablation.

Regardless of information posted here. You need to talk to your doctor about medications while pregnant and/or breastfeeding.

Per "FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether Fioricet is harmful to an unborn baby. Before taking Fioricet, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use Fioricet without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby."

With that being said, I took a lot of medications while pregnant (recently) and they were prescribed by doctors/surgeons etc (all approved by my OB) I had MANY complications during pregnancy including kidney stones and surgery to remove them. My daughter turned out relatively healthy, although she was born prematurely. Seriously, it is not worth the RISK. When they classify medications as category C it means they do NOT KNOW if it is harmful to baby.

Please refer to your OWN doctor's information on this one :-) It's really not worth potentially harming your future baby.

I will be speaking with my doctor about tapering off meds before getting pregnant again.
