Hi there...

My doctor gave me samples of three different migraine drugs a couple of months ago. They were; Maxalt, Zomig and i THINK Topomax. One of them worked very well for me- trouble is I forgot which one! I wrote it down, but lost the paper!! I've thrown the boxes out too! I need to know which one it is before my next appointment (Friday). The one that worked best was in a blue plastic case. Inside was a yellowish wafer in foil that dissolves on your tongue.

Does anyone know which one that is?

Much obliged,

S

Probably maxalt. Topomax is a daily medication... Maxalt and Zomig are taken when you get the headache.....
I have had migraines for 27 years. I have tried so many meds I have forgotten their names...

I also have chronic back pain due in part to a car accident in 2005.  I have also been diagnosed with facet disease which was aggravated by the accident and started the flare up.  3 bulging discs to the left.  Lower back pain that goes down my right leg to my knee....

Currently taking Oxycodone, MS Contin, Gabapentin Verapamil, Fioricet, Migrainal, Prozac, prednisone,  and having repeat injections in my facets and nerve ablation.

Thanks! Maybe the 3rd drug wasn't Topomax since they were all similar drugs... I totally understand forgetting the names, I've also been on a ton of scripts. I guess I'll go with Maxalt this round.

Bit of a coincidence about the back pain- mines screwed up too! I've had mid back pain since 97. I've seen several chiropractors, acupuncturists, several physiotherapists... I even tried some mystical BS energy healer out of desperation. I've had the nerve ablation procedure done twice, facet joint injections from T-6 to T-10 over a 9 month period. NOTHING has helped. They Give me Percocet and codeine for the pain, which gets me through, but I'm never really comfortable.

I'm sort of lucky with migraines, I get normal headaches often, but only suffer from the 'classic' migraine with the aura every month or two, and once went a whole year without one. When I do get them though, they're horrid. Pain killers do nothing since I always end up throwing up before they can kick in, and even if I don't, they have little effect. Years ago I had a couple Demerol injections in ER- which was a miracle, absolutely pain free- but the logistics of getting to a hospital, putting up with the noise and the bright white lights- and the waiting... I just can't do it. I don't think my doctor would prescribe something like that to me, though i wish he would. They're all so worried about addiction and abuse.

Doesn't pain suck??? To top it all off, I also have Crohns disease which has caused Osteo- which has made my back worse.

Gosh... Thanks for letting me vent. Refreshing complaining to someone who obviously understands. I hope the procedures for your back are successful.

I'm sure you've probably tried already, but just in case, I've found the herb feverfew somewhat helpful in reducing the severity and occurrence of migraines by about 20-30%. I actually found it more helpful than the cocktail of drugs they used to have me on.

Best of luck!

No problem! I've tried many migraine meds too, and can't remember them all. I just remember that Maxalt did dissolve in the mouth so it is convenient when you have a migraine and can't keep the med down long enough for it to work.

I have 2-4 migraines per week. Usually lasting 1 day but sometimes I get them where they don't let up after a week.... Miserable, I tell you!

I am going back to my neuro tomorrow for a re-work on medicine. I have to take a daily preventative med as most of the abortives do not work for me. I also get no aura or indication that the migraine is coming. I just wake up in pain. (Either in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning.)

When the migraine gets sooo bad that I can't keep anything down all day, and can't function, I usually end up in our ER. The doctors there know me by name and know what to do for me. I get an IV, and multiple meds..dilaudid, phenergan, magnesium, steroids and several others tha I can't recall at the moment. It usually takes 2 doses of the pain med to make the migraine bearable and make it so I can go home and sleep it off. Sometimes the pain is there again in the morning, and sometimes it is gone. I am very lucky to have such a good hospital close to me and wonderful insurance to be able to afford the relief I need. I never ask for pain meds for home so the doctors know I am not there just to get some narcotics. They always work to make me comfortable, and are great. I am so fortunate, and wish everyone had the same opportunity...

Hope you find a med that works for you soon! Good luck, and pain free wishes..
