migraine control while trying to get pregnant

Hi everyone,

I am usually on the Lupus boards, but I do suffer tremendously from migraines, and have for years. I am in the process of trying to get pregnant and have been taken off Topamax. I didn't realize how much it was helping until they pulled me off it! shakehead I was also on Migranal, Fiorocet with caffiene, and several other pain meds that helped but now I cannot take while trying, (which is worth it). So no longer am I on the Topamax, Migranal, amitriptyline, they are pulling me off Darvocet (can use first high risk doc said, but I am leary LOL). If anyone has any suggestions I am open.

I am sure I left several information things out since I am still waking up and that decaf coffee has not kicked in yet. redface

I am sure you will see me alot here.

My daughter just turned 1 year old last week. I did not take any medications for migraine during pregnancy and quite honestly I didnt really have a need for them (which is amazing considering I have dealt this this horrible pain for YEARS)

NOW...with that being said, I did have a hernia, kidney stones, kidney surgery, gestational diabetes, preterm labor and HELLP syndrome with my daughter. I was on lots of medications during pregnancy including pain medications, antibiotics etc some of them VERY strong. I was uneasy about taking alot of things but as you can imagine I didn't have much of a choice. Take what the doctors give you because when you are in pain it doesn't do your body any "favors" and they wouldn't give it to you if you "SHOULDN'T" be taking it.

I have talked to my husband about trying for baby #2 and we have decided I need to handle some health issues before. We just couldn't "risk" having another preemie baby right now.

ohh btw I was on 400mg of Topmax daily at one point as well and I had no idea how much it was helping until I couldn't take it anymore.

me too. have had migraines since my 20's due to getting lyme disease. I got pregnant 2 years ago (my daughter is 18 months old now) and my migraines went away during the pregnancy. It was great. They came back as soon as I stopped breatfeeding at 3 months old.

I had horrible migraines during fertility treatments and at the beginning of my pregnancy. They seemed to ease toward the end of the first trimester. My migraines are more hormonal related and the doc said she could put me on bc pills or I could try to get pregnant again quickly so my hormones would level out.(we are trying for #2) Being 35 and considering how long it took us to conceive our first baby, didn't leave much of a choice.  Unfortunately, there is not much they can give you when trying to conceive; My doc did give me Lortabs during my first pregnancy but I opted not to take them; she did allow me to have a caffeinated beverages (1-2/day) that seemed to help a bit. Excedrin Tension helped more so than regular Tylenol.  However, it has caffeine so I would leave out my caffeinated drinks if I took the Tension Excedrin. Good Luck; Sorry I can't offer much help!!
