I had my first optical migraine ever (age 63) in February.  It lasted about fifteen minutes with an aura followed by a slight headace that lasted throughout the day.  Since February I have had three more with the last one being last Saturday.  They don't last long but disrupt my eyesight while it is happening.

I am not sure why I'm having this happen but I am a very allergic person.  I spray my nose with Nasalcrom at the onset of the aura and this seems to help.  Nasalcrom is what I use for my allergy symptoms.

I have made an appointment with my eye doctor but can't get in until late August because I'm my husband just had major surgery.

If anyone has these same type of migraines, please let me know what the triggers are and what you have found out from any doctor's visits.  I'm perplexed at this point.

It sounds like the pollens, molds, etc are triggering you

I am new to the migraines, but I have noticed Chinese food or seafood trigger my migraines that I had in past years - 1 or 2 a year.  However, for the past 4 weeks I have had the worst migraines preceeded with left facial and tongue numbness, but I have not pinpointed these triggers unless it is all work stress.  I hope you find relief.

I am new to the board and recently at age 65 experienced my first optical aura before a migraine. It was very very scarey as I had a brain tumor ten years ago, benign and removed but nevertheless, it was frightening. My vision went haywire. Looked like I was looking through a piece of crystal from my chandelier with jagged bright edges and then they got jiggly like jello. Last twenty minutes and went away. affected one total eye and 1/3 of the other eye. Then followed by a moderate headache. Went to the ER, vitals ok, had a ct scan, ok, thank God, and then the next day had a comprehensive eye exam. all ok. Then the next day saw black clouds in a blue sky, Very brief, maybe less than a few minutes. Nothing since a few days ago. Really terrifying. Can anyone tell me about their aura experiences, how often, etc? Many thanks, mamaleh!

This headache has been with me about 24hours now. Chills, nausea, no more auras, spraying nose, pressure over eye, then moves to the back of my head, then to the top of my head and it has a burning sensation with it. Just came out of a trade show in business and ate alot of sugar, My business partner thinks the sugar did it. Or maybe the fluorescent lights or the air conditioning. I live in Calif. and it has been very very hot here.

If someone answers me, I am not sure where to look on this site. Can anyone tell me how to log in to any responses.
Many thanks,

Hi mamaleh,

Sorry to hear about your headache!

The first time I had an optical migraine it terrified me. I was at work. I saw something that looked like a crack in a glass windowpane across my entire field of vision, with rainbow colored lights racing around and around the edges. Then the crack spread and multiplied until the rainbow lights were everywhere and I couldn't see anything else. I literally had to sit down and wait it out because I was temporarily blind....I couldn't walk anywhere, and I certainly couldn't drive myself home! It took almost an hour for the optical effects to go away.

I saw an eye doctor who told me it was a migraine, and when I said "But it didn't hurt", he explained that not all migraines are painful. I've since had migraines with both pain and auras, with pain and no auras, and with auras and no pain. I can't really predict them.

I'm not sure if I've had sugar trigger a migraine, but I've definitely had both Splenda and gluten do it!

Good luck!
JoAnn
