Migriane Auras

I'm new to this forum, but not ot migraines. My general question is; I have been getting migraines with aura for several years. Sometimes I also get migraines without aura, and aura without migraine.
 
Lately my auras are coming more frequently. I'm 47 and I do have to say that my stress level is very high. Do any of you get auras everyday or a few times a week? I know logically that the auras are harmless, but they freak me out everytime I get them.
 
I have been taking nortripyline for over 13 years as a preventive. Does anyone know of anything better? I am seeing my neurologist tomorrow.

I started getting migraines with aura when I was 19. At that time I only got them once or twice a year. Now I am 53 and sometimes I feel like I am under constant attack! They come in waves it seems. If I take Ibuprophen (I'm not supposed to because I have Crohn's disease) when the aura first starts, the headache will be minimized. If I wait till the aura is gone to take something then its too late and I get full migraine. I was on Topamax for around 6 months and I never got a migraine or aura once but the side effects were more than I could stand. It works very well for some people though. I understand how you feel when that nasty aura starts up. I get the full scentillating scotoma, brilliant colors in a zig zagging half circle. If I see a piece of art or graphic design with colorful zigzag lines on it I feel sick!!! If you think about it, auras aren't totaly harmless. They disrupt our lives, making us temporarily blind many times a week and we have to drop everything to get through them and hope a massive headache doesnt follow. Sorry I am rambling on, I have never posted on this migraine forum of healingwell before. I normally post on Crohn's forum but ventured over here today and your post caught my eye because I totally relate to it. Healingwell is a wonderful place to find support for anything that ails you. smurf
