Hello, Im new here. I tried acupuncture for almost 3 months with no improvement of my migraine headaches.

I take Topamax 150mg daily and Inderol 20mg 2 times daily. I take Imitrex 100mg when I do get a migraine.

Migraines= 1-5 per month. After reading this forum, I realze I dont have much to complain about!! But I would like some feedback about acupuncture. Thanks!!!

It works for some and not for others. I've tried it and it's not for me. I have a good friend and it does wonders for her.

The ability of practitioner is also a huge factor. After three months I would say either accupunture isn't for you or you need a accupunturist who is better versed in the treatment of migraines.

Best of luck!

Ive used accupuncture and it does work for me. When all else doesnt work and I can get it in to the accupuncturist, I feel a big relief. It's been a blessing. The only problem for me has been that if I get a migrane all of a sudden, I cant get in to see her for too long of a time.

Good luck!

I've been on every migraine drug available, my neurologist finally shrugged his shoulders one day and said "which one did you like best?" That's when I finally felt desperate enough to try acupuncture. A couple things I have learned about acupuncture:

1) I totally agree that its all about the practitioner, there is a lot of talent involved. I wouldn't go to just anyone, certainly not a chiropractor that also does acupuncture. Also, there are two variants of acupuncture, Chinese and Japanese. I totally prefer Japanese, the needles are smaller, you don't even feel them and the treatment is more subtle/gentle. But seriously shop around looking very closely at credentials, where they were trained, how long, what style, professional organizations they belong too, etc.

2) Acupuncture can definitely help calm down or even stop a migraine attack. However, what I've found is that it takes continuous routine treatments to really have an impact. When I started out, I went twice a week for about 3 months. Then I was gradually able to space out my treatments less often until now I can maintain good effect by going once every other week. If I have an attach in between I can go in for an additional treatment.

Acupuncture hasn't been a cure for me thats for sure, I still get migraines. But its been a big improvement for me. A better result than any of the medications I have been on and there are no drug side effects. I used to have migraines 4-5 days of every week. Now I get one about every 10 days and it is far more mild than they used to be.

Good luck!

How do you go about finding a good acupunturist? When I looked on the net, they all say they specalize in Migraines.
I intervied 2 women prationers before I started. I was worse after the treatments for almost 3 months.

All GP's can technically treat migraine, but I would rely on a neurologist and preferably a headache specialist to treat mine. The same idea holds true for acupuncturists. While they may all say they treat it, it doesn't mean they are employing good technique.

By in large finding a good acupunturist is hit and miss. The good ones get a large following via word of mouth.

If you can't get any good recommendations from friends or acquaintances, then I would quiz the acupunturists on the phone before you go see them. Some acupunturist take several month long post graduate migraine courses or enter migraine certificate programs (this is all in addition the their basic acupunture certification/degree).

I just happened on to this subject matter and thought I would coment: I am not advertising for myself but for acupuncture in general. I am an acupucturist, and yes it is all about the practitionere! word of mouth is best way to find a good one. Do not see someone that only works part time at it, try to find someone who has been doing it for at least 5 years...depending on the state you are in acupuncture should be regulated and there should be a state association with a web site and a list of members. call one from the list and start asking questions. As a general rule, if you can get in right away, prob a reason for that...lol

PS; I do not recomend seeing a chiropractor that does "acupuncture" their traing is not the same and their results will not be the same. nothing against chiropractors but they are not acupuncturist.

If you are in Oklahoma and need an acupuncturist...would love to see you...but three week wait fo new clients though sorry

Acupuncture never helped my migraines either. I tried it for a long time. It is relaxing and a stress reducer... but no help with migraine.
