Hello all,
I have been having horrible headaches for about a month now they occur every day they do not go way. The headahces are behind my eyes and around my sinus area, I though I had a sinus infection went and had a ct scan my sinus's where clear. The Doctor said that I most likey had a frontal migraine and I should go see a nuero Dr which I have. He ordered a MRI which came back normal thank god. I'm now taking Topamax for my headaches which is not helping at all. I'm now up to a 100mg a day the only side effect i'm having is the tingling in im hands which is not bad. My other concerns is the lighted and dizzyness and nausea they will not go away, has any one else experienced this with there headaches? A good friend of mine that is a nurse believes that I might be experiencing cluster headaches. any ones thoughts would be helpful.

I'm sorry to hear that you're in so much pain and having a difficult time.

I would suggest calling your doctor and speaking with him about your concerns. I'm not too familiar with cluster headaches. It could be cluster or chronic migraine.

I have heard that cluster headaches can respond well to a high dose of verapamil.

How long have you been on the topiramate? Sometimes it will take a couple of months to see an effect.

Have you ever tried any abortive drugs (e.g. imitrex or maxalt)?

Welcome to Healing Well. I work on a Helpline here in the UK for Cluster Headaches, and will help you if I possibly can.

First of all I need some answers to some questions!

How long do the attacks last?
What sort of pain is it, dull, sharp, burning, stabbing or something else?
Do you get a watery or droopy eye, stuffy nose?
How many attacks a day do you get?

If you prefer you can email me with some details, you can click on the envelope under my name.

take care

Hello EvilFluorescents,

Thanks for the response I have been on the Topamax for weeks now. I return back to the Doctor next week. I have also taken other meds such has the Imitrex that does not phase me at all. The thing that bother me the most is the lighted headed and dizzyness I have had it for weeks. It is very scary.

Thanks for listening......

Many of us who have migraine also experience that feeling of light headedness and dizzyness during an attack. It's called migraine associated vertigo or MAV.

In general, the treatment for this is the same as for migraine. I've heard that (textbook) first line therapy is verapamil. Consequently, first line therapy for cluster headache is verapamil as well.

Hope your appointment goes well!

Sounds funny, but try some antihistamine. I get a lot of allergy migraines. If caught early on, I can take an allergy pill, some caffine and non asprin and migraine goes away. And a neuro is a very good person to see for migraines. I get a couple different types of migraines. I also get some neurological ones, and for some reason I have half of my fingers on one hand that go numb before a migraine. I also get rebound migraines.

I've had similar headaches for over a year. I feel like I am coming down with a cold or have a sinus infection, among other symptoms. My diagnosis so far has been migraines. I am doing Topamax with abortive Imitrex but plan to switch to Neurotin soon to see if that helps. (we only just started this process in January so I am new to all these meds too) It looks like it's going to be a take a pill, see if it helps sort of game. Everybody is different. Good luck and I would love to hear what you find that helps.
