From the age of 15 to 18 I got at least 3-4 migraines a week with no APPARENT causes, which really messed with my life. Then, by some sort of miracle, the migraines decreased to maybe one severe migraine a month for appoximatley 2 years. The majority of these 6 or so years, i have drank alcohol, but not excessivly, and the allcohol didnt seem to have any involvment with the migraine attacks. But from the age of 20 i started getting migraines the morning after consumeing alcohol and rarely at any other time, be it 1 pint or 5 pints of beer, or spirits, and ive been known to be holding the left side of my head while sleeping during the onset of the attack. I am now 22 and this is still the case.                                                                                                                                                             I guess what i really want to know is, why did or why do my migraines seem to be going through changes in frequency and in apparant causes at differant stages of my life. I have tried a whole range of differant migraine drugs, accupuncture, countless doctors and even a man who held a crystal over my hand to tell me if my bed was located over an under ground spring. I was recently told that chiropacters can help greatly with migraines through fixing back alignment problems that you didnt know you had.                                                   Im just not sure if chiropractics would work for me, as it just seems that over the years, the attacks just keep finding new ways of entering my life through differant windows.                                                                                                              Thank you to anyone who can help or even just for commenting!!

hi :-)

I've had migraines since I was 17 and I'm now 38 and alcohol has always been a trigger for me.  In my teens and twenties I drank alcohol regardless and would usually wake up with a migraine the next day which I wrongly labelled as a hangover! I used to wonder why my hangovers were so much worse than my friends, now I realise that the day long headache/vomiting/intense pain on the left side of my head was actually alcohol induced migraine.

As I've got older I've been able to tolerate alcohol less and less, for a while I could drink small amounts of clear spirits i.e vodka and be reasonably ok...but if I drunk wine I would be ill for days.  Now though I can't tolerate any alcohol at all.  The last time I drank was last year at a family event and I had to go home early the small amount of alcohol I drank triggered a migraine within 30 mins that was so bad I was in bed for the next 2 days!  Not worth it, so now I'm teetotal wink

I read somewhere about alcohol containing high amounts of tannin which can cause migraine in some people, red wine is especially high in this which explains why many people get a headache after drinking it I guess :)

As for the migraines changing pattern, mine have gradually got worse as I've got older and I seem to be much more sensitive to any triggers now, sometimes I can have a few months where they seem better then bam I get a month of sheer hell although I did absolutely nothing differently!

Hope this helps :)

Julie

Hey, thanks for the reply, what i dont get is, from 16 to 18 years of age ive been drinking alcohol and never got a migraine as a result, other than the regular migraines that seemed to be on a cycle which would occur on the same days of every week, (unless i got a 2 day migraine which would jump the regular migraines forward a day, it was never the case that i would miss a migraine) then for approx 2 years i rarely got migraines and i was still drinking almost every weekend. I guess it all caught up with me in the end. thanks julie
