Hello, I am new here and I found this forum while searching for others who may have the same problems as I.

I started having 1-2 Migraine headaches a week around 4 months ago, i have seen a few doctors as well as a terrible neurologist, and a couple urgent care clinics Sad

so far the docs have tried Maxalt MLT, Treximet, Imitrex, Zomig, and Relpax. a couple of which changed my throbbing HA from a letter opener generously applied to the temple to
a nice sledgehammer. Nearly all of which made my heart race, resting rate of between 100 - 135 BPM, I am a pretty fit person as i lift weights 3-5 days a week and even on low resistance high rep burnout days i don't believe my HR would exceed 160ish.

now my problem exists as I am debilitated when having an attack at work, i cannot use any more sick leave or take FMLA because missing one or two days without pay puts my family in jeopardy.
not to mention i pick my 9 month old daughter up from the sitter every afternoon, and twice in the past 3 weeks i've had to have someone pick her up for me.

i did try 7.5mg hydrocodone that i received from the urgent care clinic, and a 10mg (Norco i believe) pain reliever my friend takes for back pain. These allowed me to work and function at practically full capacity. I am very aware of overuse HA and potential for abuse, but i am literally at my wits end, I need pain relief at work until i find a preventative med or Triptan that works.

i have diligently kept up an extensive HA journal and am trying to narrow down triggers

I am afraid to ask my PCP for a narcotic pain medicine, even though at max would be used 1-2 times per week. I do not know how to go about this as i feel dirty just asking.

sorry for the lengthy post, I'll shut my trap now Sad

What preventative meds have you tried? I think all the ones you listed are abortives. What do you think your triggers are? Does it help if you throw on some sunglasses when you feel a migraine coming on? I take hydrocodone when I need to - it is a narcotic so I am also very careful with it. I alternate it with ibuprofen which sometimes help. It does take time to try out all the drugs that are available especially since with a lot of the preventatives it takes a few weeks to get up to a therapeutic level. Please take care and keep posting.

hi there migraine man? sorry to hear about your horrors of migraine pain. have you had your heart checked you may have high blood pressure. I also heard that botox helps migraine headaches??????just throwin it out there maybe you want to do some research on it. the norco is not a heavy duty pain med. maybe you need something stronger. there aint nothin worse than a migraine headache, except a bad toothe ache. idea hope your feeling better, sue

Yes the medication i have taken are all abortives my doctor said next step would be a preventative. As for my blood pressure and heart both are good and healthy for a 24 year old male.

Sunglasses are always in my car so i wear them frequently but im not really sensitive to light, im very sensitive to sound though and certain smells make me nauseous, im leaning towards strong smells as being triggers and possibly consistent loud noise, but it is hard to distinguish because i work in a pretty loud shop as an aircraft mechanic where numerous strong smelling chemicals are used.

I am totally on board to try everything out until i find my triggers and find the preventative / abortive that works for me, but i cannot miss work while this process runs it's course.

I have yet to ask my doc about pain medication to control it while at work, frankly i wouldn't know what to ask for :( Hell if he said wearing a rubber nose and a cowboy hat would kill the pain and allow me to not miss work and pick up my daughter i'd do it.

thanks for the replies :)

Hi Duckbitesman,

Sorry to hear you are suffering with this. You need to see a Neurologist who is a Headache Specialist and the HS will know so much more about headaches of all kinds as well as migraine than a general Neurologist.

You probably need a good preventative medication, this would have to be guaged by a HS Neuro around your personal well being.

Your biggest problem as I see it, is where you are working with strong chemical smells as these can often trigger nasty attacks. Would it be possible for you to wear a mask of some sort around these chemicals?

Hope this helps, take care

Ann
