i have been dealing with migraines for over 20 yrs. the past 6 yrs have been nightly migraines for up to 6 wks & then they will go away for 10-15 months. i take calan & depakote as preventatives & maxalt when it strikes. the migraines occur shortly after i go to bed & not asleep yet.

this latest bout (3 wks long)is not giving up. i have have my depokate dose doubled, had 3 infusions of toradol & solumedrol with iv fluids & am now using O2.

and on several occassions, these migraines have been different. along with the eye, brow & temple pain, i have gotten sharp waves of pain in the back & top of my head.

any ideas?

Hi Aprildawn,

Sorry to hear you are having a tough time. I work on a helpline here in the UK for Cluster Headache - we cover many other headaches as well. I am no Doc so cannot give a diagnosis but might be able to help.

Have you seen a Neurologist who is a Headache Specialist??? If not I would urge you to do so. Do you get any other symptoms alongside the pain like a watery or droopy eye?? Stuffy nose?? How long do your attacks last?? Has the O2 helped??? Got some tips for that if you are struggling - let me know!!??

Have you tried Imitrex injections?? If O2 works the injections would probably be far more helpful!! - only draw back with them is that you can only have 2 in 24 hours unlike O2 when you can have it as often as is needed. They come in a cartridge so you don't see the needle, you do it yourself - I have had them for years!!

Is the pain throbbing?? burning?? sharp?? or something else??

take care

I am considering seeing a headache specialist. My neuro suffers from migraines too so she knows where I am coming from.

I am now on a full month of medrol - predisone that appears to be working. I have only had 1 headache in the past 4 nights. And O2 took care of that very quickly.

The pain is usually the throbbing, sharp pain that starts in the eyebrow & goes to my eye. Many times I get lots of pressure at the base of my skull before they come on. I do not get the droopy eye or stuffy nose. My neuro did notice that my left eye was red ( that is the side that the migraines come on.) If left untreated, the migrianes usually last about 3 hours. With the maxalt, about 1 hour.

During this bout, however, I have had 2 headaches that had very sharp pain at the back & top of my head after the initial migraine has started. This is new. After awhile, that pain subsides & I am left with the normal migraine.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that this bout of headaches is gone. It has been more difficult to get rid of this time.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Aprildawn,

It sounds like a classic Clusterheadache to me!!! - NOT migraine!!! But, I am no Doc and would strongly urge you to see a Neurologist who is a Headache Specialist!!! The Imitrex injections will work within ten minutes!!! - for Clusterheadache not Migraine - would be well worth you trying them!!!

Please let me know what they say.

take care
