My headaches started in August of 2010, and would occur every 3-4 days or so, weren't extremely painful, but were debilitating. I'm 20 years old and work full time and go to school full time, so being in this was horrible. I went to my primary care doctor with my symptoms, who ordered a CT scan w/out contrast, which I've heard doesn't always show everything. It did not show anything besides a deviated septum, but an ENT doctor saw my slides and said this would not cause the headaches. My primary care doctor then recommended I see a neurologist.
My first neurologist was quick to assume the headaches were the result of stress, whcih is very frustrating. I stay busy, sure, but I know that I am not stressed in any way and have been taking on these tasks for many years with no side effects like headaches. Also, there are plenty of times, like when I'm on breaks or vacation, that I still get the headaches. That neurologist prescribed me Topamax, but I stopped seeing him and switched to a new neurologist.
I feel as if I responded to the Topamax at first, and would only get a headache every couple of weeks, and it made them less intense. However, by May of 2011 my headaches came back more frequently and more intense. My neurologist doubled my Topamax dosage in early July to 100mg. This did not help at all, and things continued to get worse. I've developed other significant symptoms.
First off, I have had roughly eight episodes hand tremors since the middle of August. They will last roughly 2 hours and gradually wear off. They predominately occur in my right hand, although my left hand sometimes has them too. When I do not have the full on tremors with my fingers moving about uncontrollably, my hands are sometimes still very shaky, and I feel as if my heart is beating really fast.
Furthermore, my headaches have gotten so bad to the point that I cry, and are happening every day or every other day. They used to only happen in the afternoon, but now will sometimes begin in the morning and last all day. I have intense pressure in the frontal/temporal area, and then will have periods of surging pain where it gets much worse. I feel may times as if I cannot think straight and am just staring into space, very confused. I have had to miss some days of work and college classes, and this is just not working for me. I have tried every over-the-counter headache medication, and they do not work at all. Topamax now seems useless, and so does the Elavil that my doctor just recently prescribed to me. I'm not sure whether it's related, but I do frequently feel gassy/bloated, very thirsty, and have lost a lot of hair in the past coupple months.I also had an EEG last month that was normal. My doctor also prescribed Tremadol last week, and this also is not effective.
Any of your thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I do not feel as if my neurologist is taking my situation seriously since I am as young as I am. I have booked an appointment at the Mayo Clinic, but cannot get in until December. I'm worried, and feel as if I cannot bear to wait that long!
