Hello everyone I'm new here, and I have had a chronic migraine headache for over 6 months. I am being treated at Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia, PA by Dr. Silberstein and I trust his judgement. He had me admitted to Methodist Hospital for detox and IV treatment for 7 days and the DHE cocktail brought my headaches to a 3 on a 10 scale which for me was great but then I get home and I am averaging a pretty moderate chronic migraines. Now I live in Emmaus PA and I travel up to Philly every 2 weeks to see the Dr or his PA Dr. Cho. Well this last trip I saw Dr. Cho because Dr. Silberstein is out of the country, and I am having a severe attack for over 5 days and she prescribed Methergine 2x a day for 2 weeks. I want to know if anyone else went through this treatment? Please and Thank you.

Hi debsosta,

Welcome to Healing Well. I think this is a similar drug or the same as Methysergide. I have taken Methysergide and it did help me, but you need a drug holiday every six months with this. It shouldn't be taken long term unless you have at least a month off every 6 months.

Be warned, that it is not a good idea to take any of the triptans whilst on this med as it can cause 'Serotonin Syndrome'

It's certainly worth a go to see if it helps. Hope this helps!

take care

Hi debsosta!
I have gone through that same thing. I was in the hospital for 3 days doing some DHE treatments and it would help
but then a month or so later I would be back into another migraine cycle and my parents wanted an alternative rather than
just putting me back in the hospital, so my doctor described a methergine pack. I didn't do the 2 a day for 2 weeks but
I did a pack that was something like 6 pills on the first day (two at breakfast, one at lunch, one at dinner, and two at bedtime)
and then it decreased as the week went on. It helped me so much, so I really think it will help you. Another thing that I should
tell you is that you should be careful taking aspirin or excedrin or whatever abortive medication you take because some of
them have caffeine in them that can throw you back into a cycle. So if you get a migraine and you take the excedrin or whatever
your abortive medicine is, and then you get another migraine the next day and pop some excedrin, then you get a migraine the
next day and still take the excedrin, then you're just going to keep fueling the "migraine fire" instead of putting it out with some kind
of medicine that doesn't have caffeine as one of the ingredients. The caffeine in the medicine always through me out of my groove,
and even some medicine that doesn't have caffeine in it can cause you to have rebound headaches. You should google rebound headaches
and see if anything your doing shows up when you read through some articles. Just be careful when you take the medicine that is supposed
to be helping you, because sometimes if you take it too much, it can have bad effects. Good luck! Hope you start feeling better
