It's considered very hard to treat but it's not a life sentence. I'm at the nine and a half year mark right now and the best advice I can give is to focus on improving your life as someone with severe headaches and trying not to devote all of your energy towards hoping for sudden, major relief. Otherwise you end up frustrated and you' may not be devoting the necessary time to slow, step-by-step improvement.
In short, hope for the best but don't give up if things don't work out that way.
