I am new here, so I am very appreciative of any advice I can get.  Sorry if this is a long post.  I started having Migraines with diziness about 6 or 7 years ago. I took over the counter med for a little over a year to try and handle them but to no avail. Finally went to a Neurologist and he put me on topamax. the Migraines and diziness stop and I felt so much better. Started finally getting my life back, or so I thought.  After several month I started having stomach issue, but never assocated it with Topamax. So like before I just handled with it for several years taking over the counter med to help me. I finally got to the point that I couldn't take it any more. After going to 2 specialist I was told I have IBS and they have found 2 tumors on my liver, (benign) they are watching them to see if they grow and if they do  , they will have to remove them. The specialist said that all the weight I lost over 25 pounds and the tumors are most likely caused from the Topamax.  So I gradually stop taking it. Hoping that the Migraines and the diziness would not come back. Did good for a month and a half, but now they are back. So I have had to start back on my topamax to stop the Migraines and diziness. I have a appointment with the Neuro, but it isn't until the last of August.

Since I started taking Topamax again(I have taking it for 5 days) I have had horrible stomach problems. I wish I could of seen this several years ago.

My question for anyone reading this is what do you take for Migraines and diziness. I need something that will not affect you liver and that is easy on your stomach. Hoping and Praying that there is something out there I can take.

I have done some research, but thought I would ask here, cause first hand knowledge is the best.

Hi Tinmama

I have sufferred from migraines for 30 years and have tried everything from accupunture, zomig, sandomigran, inderal etc etc to many anti depressants and migraine medications and have now gone onto Topomax as what feels like a last resort due to black outs which I come to with a migraine from hell and the only thing that helps is massive doses of morphine for the paine which leave me feeling very sick. Life as a mrigrainer is insufferable and I feel for what you are going through.

I to am asking for assisance, With in this 1st week on 50mg morning and night I have the tiredness I expected but I find I have the start of a headache about half an hour before the tablet is due and half an hour after taking it follow by approx 2 hours of irritability. Is this normal in the beginning. Food especially meat tastes terrible, smells terrible not that I am too worried as the anti depressants put on 30 kg that I have not been able to shift no matter how many hour I run for. Have people had success with Topomax?

Thanks

I'm so sorry, Tinmama. I took topamax for 2+ years, and it eased the pain of my migraines only marginally. It wasn't worth the expense for me. It was quite difficult for me to titrate off of, as my headaches worsened every time I tried to reduce the dose. I persevered, and got off. I'll never take it again. Have you tried the beta-blocker inderal (blood pressure medicine)? Speak with your doctor about it. It may work for you as well. I had better results with this drug, and it's quite inexpensive. I didn't stay on it because it affected my running....made me slower....my legs felt as though they were full of lead. Now I refuse to take any prophylactic for migraines, and the vaso-constricting drugs such as Imitrex no longer work for me. Sometimes I take 800 mg of Advil at onset (which is risky because NSAIDs in high doses are not good for you), and that either knocks it out or delays the pain for several hours (if the headache starts while I am at work). When I get home, I take Flexeril. This makes me super drowsy, and the headache is GONE. I go to bed and wake up without a migraine later. Prevention is key. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water every day, eat only organic, grass-fed meats, no alcohol, no white stuff (white sugar, white flour, white rice, white potatoes, and other simple carbs). Avoid any processed foods such as pre-mixed and pre-packaged foods. Eat tons of salads and raw, organic veggies & fruits. Now I am gluten-free as well, and this has made the biggest difference. I have lost weight, and have fewer migraines. I was having them 18 days in a given month, now it's been reduced to 8 or 10 days. Best of luck to both of you!

Hi all, I'm also new to this site. I have to say that I had a very bad reaction to the Topamax. I basically was having mini strokes like reactions and I didn't realize what was causing it. I had a lot of people at work scared and the medical staff on call most days. I had to get off the stuff.
I can't take any NSAID or related drugs, due to reactions; I can't take anything that might lower blood pressure as I already have borderline comatose levels; so it has been very tricky finding anything that works. I have been dealing with migraines for about 8 years with them getting progressive wrost each year. I currently have had months of 26-29 days of pain with at least 5 days of complete flat out, immobilization due to my migraines. I have recently started botox shots in combination with nortriptyline. It's early days, but there seems to be some help with the almost daily ones. Not as much luck with the immobilizing ones. It took me three neurologist to get to this point and eliminating just about every trigger except for stress, tantrums from Mother Nature and lack of sleep.
Hope you will be able to find something that will work for you.
