I'm so sorry, Tinmama. I took topamax for 2+ years, and it eased the pain of my migraines only marginally. It wasn't worth the expense for me. It was quite difficult for me to titrate off of, as my headaches worsened every time I tried to reduce the dose. I persevered, and got off. I'll never take it again. Have you tried the beta-blocker inderal (blood pressure medicine)? Speak with your doctor about it. It may work for you as well. I had better results with this drug, and it's quite inexpensive. I didn't stay on it because it affected my running....made me slower....my legs felt as though they were full of lead. Now I refuse to take any prophylactic for migraines, and the vaso-constricting drugs such as Imitrex no longer work for me. Sometimes I take 800 mg of Advil at onset (which is risky because NSAIDs in high doses are not good for you), and that either knocks it out or delays the pain for several hours (if the headache starts while I am at work). When I get home, I take Flexeril. This makes me super drowsy, and the headache is GONE. I go to bed and wake up without a migraine later. Prevention is key. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water every day, eat only organic, grass-fed meats, no alcohol, no white stuff (white sugar, white flour, white rice, white potatoes, and other simple carbs). Avoid any processed foods such as pre-mixed and pre-packaged foods. Eat tons of salads and raw, organic veggies & fruits. Now I am gluten-free as well, and this has made the biggest difference. I have lost weight, and have fewer migraines. I was having them 18 days in a given month, now it's been reduced to 8 or 10 days. Best of luck to both of you!
