Hi, I'm just popping over from the Ulcerative Colitis board, but also have lived a life w/ migraines since I was a kid so thought I'd check in over here.  I take axert (a triptan), which works most of the time but I think I'm averaging about 3 migraines per week some weeks.

My doc just recommended propanolol as a preventative--anyone here tried it?  If so, did it work?  What were the side effects?

Thanks for any input!

Hello and welcome to our board chinamomto,

I'm currently on it to treat abdominal aspects of the migraines I experience. It's been quite effective in getting those under control but hasn't made any difference in my actual head pain. In terms of side effects, it's a Beta blocker so it'll lower your blood pressure and pulse, slow your metabolism, and it can cause some significant fatigue that I understand most people acclimate to (though I'm still struggling after 3 months).

Good luck!

What dose are you on cynthiaz? I've been taking 20mg three times a day for over three months and I'm still walloped by the fatigue. Then again I am on a bunch of other meds that contribute to that.

I plan to talk to my pharmacist, but my biggest concern is the fatigue and possible low blood pressure. Is it the kind of thing where it takes awhile for the side effects to show up, or is it more immediate? My dr. told me to take it in the a.m., but would timing be an issue here for side effects? I want to get the migraines under control but am afraid of big time fatigue.

The side effects showed up for me right when I got up to the full dose that I'm on. But, again, I'm on a number of other medications that cause fatigue (though never anything like this). From what I've heard from others though, it is frequently an effective medication with bearable side effects.

I take 20mg 2 times daily. I also take it for hypertension.
