horrible neck headaches from sun

does anyone get these?  anytime, i go outside to do something for an hour or more - i get these horrible headaches when i come in and it progressively gets worse as the night goes on.  i'm so sick of it.  i'm miserable. and aspirin, ibuprofen doesn't touch them.  ughhh
i don't understand what causes them.  it's like a bad tension headache but my neck is affected the most.

Hi Hazelnut,

That's a tough one. Barring any secondary issues related to sun sensitivity (skin problems for instance) I don't know of anything that would make the sun directly cause neck pain. My best guess is that the sun is a headache trigger and neck pain is an associated symptom of your headaches. Sometimes the side effects of a headache event or a migraine can be worse than the actual head pain.

Dear Hazel what are you eating or drinking while you are out in the sun. I am sensitive to the sun but I get a rash from it. Perhaps you are squinting badly while out in the sun. If not, you may hav a food intolerance causing your headaches. So many of my food induced headaches used to effect the lower back of my skull and neck.

I suffered from headaches and dizziness all my life. 5 years ago I discovered that I was Salicylate Intolerant, allergic to aspirin and all foods containing salicylates. Aspirin is a salicylate that comes form the bark of the willow tree. All plants produce salicylates as a natural insecticide. It is in things likes fruit,most vegetables, tomato sauce, olive oil and many more. Theres a good list of foods in the book,"Salicylate Intolerance and The Healthier I Ate the Sicker I Got."

Right before I hit bottom I had such a pain in my right eye that I went for a CAT scan to rule out a tumor. Once I went on a low sal diet I got rid of my headaches,sizziness, nausea, neck pain, arthritis, asthma, dry eyes, nosebleeds, swollen glands and a foggy headed feeling.

No one should just accept a diagnosis of Migraine Headaches or Fibromyalgia when they can prevent them by finding out whats causing them. Its usually a food intolerance. Unfortunately there is no test for Salicylate Intolerance because it isnt an allergy. You have to go off the foods that are high and very high in sals and see how you feel. Good luck, Joan

I know what you're talking about.
I have the same problem with the sun, I have some kind of migraine that's triggered by bright sun, full moon, not enough or too much sleep.
Not much that I could do.
I never go out without my sunglasses, because if I do I want to cut off my head later.
Only thing that makes it a little better is resting in a quite dark room.
oh, and I wear a white sunhat whenever I can.

i am posting in this forum in hopes of helping anyone else who might have my similar condition (this forum was high in the search results)

have had migraine like headaches for 30 years. they are different headaches from specifically Migraine, tension, dehydration, barometric pressure, light, environmental allergy, other severe food allergy - but these symptoms or conditions can contribute to my version of headaches

the trigger is specifically and only when the Sun's (UV?) rays contact my skin/body directly especially on my head and causes a severe front/temple headache. the severity has been marginally getting worse over these 40 years (leading more suspicion to a cumulative diet factor). the effects come on typically after 4 hours of first exposure, and do not respond to NSAIDs, acetyl-salicylic acid, MAXALT or other meds and are severe requiring sleeping off, ice, quiet and rest for up to 4 days. they seemed to start when in my 20s i was working in a chemical lab and also doing renovations involving lots of new item VOCs.

i have tried many therapies, devices, treatments, meds, etc until recently trying longer term elimination dieting, only to realize that a restricted diet appeared to show the first signs of lessening of conditions and inflammation indicators.

this MIRACLE is changing my life, my healing from cuts and bruises is returning to normal and various joint pain, minor body malaises and youth and vitality is returning - i am active and eat well and enjoy some extreme activities. Possibly issues with digestion, IBS, joint pain, lowered energy,

my elimination diet showed positive effects ONLY after 6months removing ALL of these suspect foods: dairy, gluten & wheat (and actually ALL grains except white rice was reintroduced at 4 months), soy, corn, fructose/glucose, legumes, garlic, industrial seed oils especially 'vegetable' oil; this diet helped to reduce the accumulated chronic inflammation symptoms but the elimination eventually of ALL grains showed the best results and now i can risk walking around even on sunny days without an umbrella, hat and hooded nylon jacket (it gets quite hot on 30-44C days). i was a vegetarian and vegan for many years recently but recently changed to a paleo style of eating. Of great help for me in the elimination diet stage were rice crackers, nuts & seeds, lots of veggies, local sustainable and chem free farm raised animal products, inositol, spirulina/chlorella, green juicing, dehydrating, pickling, making water kefir, mushrooms, various berries, handmade organic chocolate and various elixirs and potions, ALL organic produce & fruits, Omega-3 fish oil, sprouting (be very selective), being aware of the difference between grains (prolamines/lectins/phytates), seeds, grasses and other phycological knowledge. i understand from various readings and opinions that the reduction of inflammation and attendant symptoms may take 1-2 years before being able to be outside in the Sun without symptoms again.

i hope my process might help someone with this mysterious and debilitating condition.
