I haven't posted here before. I've had occasional migraines since I hit puberty. Last year I started getting 4-5 day long ones after I started cimzia for my Crohn's disease. I finally went to a neurologist for the first time. We tried verapamil and inderal as a prophylactic, but I didn't tolerate them very well. After about 6 or so months I stopped getting the multi-day migraines so the neurologist agreed to just let me try imitrex and see how it went.
In January I started getting multi-day migraines again either right before or as my period started. I tried some all natural progesterone cream on the advice from my gyn, and it helped the first month, but not since. So I saw the neurologist again this past week and he suggested trying nortriptyline (25mg) and seeing if that helps.
I saw him on day 3 of a migraine spell. I wound up calling him two days later because I was still having a migraine. He prescribed a round of prednisone. I've been on pred for my Crohn's several times. I don't tolerate it very well--I get insomnia, irritable, and super moody. I figured I'd bite the bullet and do it because this was getting pretty ridiculous. However, I didn't realize it would be a 12-day course until I picked up the prescription. I called the next day and asked if there was anyway I could take a smaller dose for less time. He was very unsympathetic and told me the nortriptyline should help counter act some of the side effects I normally feel.
Well...it's not helping if anything I think the nortriptyline is making me even more irritable and anxious. I don't have a good history of tolerating antidepressants, but figured I'd try this since it would be a low dose. I am not helping since I decided that I couldn't tolerate 40mg of pred for 3 days, then 30 for 3, and so on. So I decided to try just 40, and then 30, and then step down by 5mg each day. One of my friends gets migraines and her neurologist has given her the medrol packs so it was a shorter course and lower dosage too. How long does it take the pred to kick in? Have I made this ineffective by trying to shorten the duration and dosage?
I don't know that there's anything to do. But do you have any suggestions to stop this migraine cycle? Do you have any suggestions for stopping the hormonal trigger?
I am now on day 7 of a migraine and beside myself. While I appreciate any suggestions, I think I mostly needed to vent.
