I am new to this forum so I hope I'm posting in the right area. I was diagnosed with Hemiplegic Migraines 09/2011; before that I had never had a migraine in my life. A little history on me: I am 35 years old, married with children, don't drink, don't do drugs, don't smoke, pretty socially active. My first episode started with an immediate intense headache in the back of my head, followed by facial drooping and weakness in the right arm and leg. I thought I was having a stroke so my husband rushed me to the ER. A CT cleared a stroke and after 5 days in the hospital a neurologist diagnosed me with hemiplegic migraines. Genetic testing later confirmed it is Familiar Hemiplegic Migraines (FHM). I started on Depakote and Immitrex upon release from the hospital. I had a second attack a few months after the first one so I was switched to Topamax 25mg at that time; however, the medication made me feel suicidal so I discontinued it and went back to the Depakote. Since early 2012 I have not had another attack and have barely had a headache.
Then June 17, 2013 hit. I had been tired all weekend, barely getting out of bed the entire time. I got up Monday to go to work and had a little aura but nothing major, and a small headache which I attributed to the weather (it had been a windy weekend). Throughout the day the aura progressed, followed by vomiting when the headache hit fully, and I also lost all function on my right side. Knowing what it was my husband took me to the ER where they admitted me for 5 days. During that time I was given Decatrol, Sulfran, Kenalog (nerve block in my head), Toradol, Dilaudid, Immitrex, Magnesium Sulfate, Depakote, plus a few others..by Friday afternoon my pain had gone from a 9 to a 7, I had regained function in my arm but was still having trouble with my leg. I went home and rested all weekend. I was d/c home on Immitrex, Depakote and Excedrin Migraine (I avoid narcotics so as not to trigger a rebound headache).
Yesterday I returned to work. Immediately I began having trouble with my arm again and my headache spiked. Then I started having trouble with my speech. I wasn't slurring words, but I couldn't remember words, even my name, and had difficulty getting words out. So back to the ER I went. Because of my new symptoms they put me under a stroke protocol, but as soon as the ER doctor came in he discontinued that and stated it was just still my migraine. he gave me a steroid and sent me on my way, telling me to "rest it off."
Today I am no better. I have a call into my Neuro for options because at this point I can no longer function.
My question is...(sorry the post was so long)...how long can this possibly last? It's been over a week and it seems that there's no end in sight...any info is appreciated.
