I have suffered from horrific migraines for twenty years (except during my pregnancy and for a few years afterward). They are clearly menstrual migraines as they occur once every 12-14 days along my cycle. Naratriptan does help with the pain, but I still lose a day once every two weeks. I want to try to prevent them completely. Unfortunately, I seem to be very sensitive to medication and have only found one thing that worked and it was temporary.
Here is what I have tried:
Nadolol - I had a terrible side effect after only one day. My hands were numb and my blood pressure went crazy. Quit.
Amitryptaline - After three days, I had a strange side effect where I felt like I had to urinate all the time, even when I didn't. Then on day four, I woke up and my lower lip was completely swollen. It seemed like some sort of allergic reaction, so I quit.
Exercise alone - no effect.
Magnesium supplement plus exercise - This WORKED. Like really worked. I had no migraines for 47 days, the longest of my life. And then, suddenly, it stopped working. I went back to my regular migraine schedule.
I was thinking of trying 5-HTP and that google search is what led me to this forum. I'm just wondering if anyone out there had advice or had successfully prevented their menstrual migraines.
