Does anyone here have TMJ problems? I have just talked to my mom, she told me that she'd taken me to a specialist when I was 8 who said I had TMJ which was causing my migraines. I only remember wearing a retainer for a while, then giving up on that because it didn't seem to work. I researched a bit and I know that these daily migraines started right after I had 3 long dentist visits in 2 weeks! It all makes sense. My dentist said physio could help, but it would be too expensive. I wear a hockey mouth guard to stop grinding my teeth at night, I can't afford the real one.
Any suggestions?

Mel,

I also wear a guard at night because of very severe grinding!  During the day I have to constantly be chewing gum (or at least holding it in my mouth) or eating something in order to keep my jaw relaxed enough to not clench it.  I've had to do this for years and would'nt know what to do if they ever quit making gum.  I think the key is to find a way to keep your jaw relaxed...

Not sure I helped, but at least tried!

Hi Mel,

I wear a night guard made by the dentist because I grind my teeth so badly. I find some relief. I can't chew gum because my teeth are so sensitive. I practice deep relaxation before going to sleep and take melatonin to get as quiet and calm a sleep as possible. These seem to be the most successful so far.

Nicky and Mel....

I have also started taking melatonin at night before going to bed.  I read in an article that it is a natural form of headache relief.  Seems to be helping a little so far!  My night-guard is also made by my dentist and it fits over my two front teeth and kind of clicks in....so that I don't spit it out in the middle of the night.  (Which is what I did with my previous one)  I am on my 2nd one in a year...you are not supposed to be able to stretch them out...(it is made of some kind of hard material that the dentist shapes to your teeth), but somehow I ground so much that I loosened it up so that it wouldn't stay in anymore.

I know you were concerned about the cost of one from a dentist...I think mine was around $150...but I've seen advertisements for others that are better than the plain plastic mouthpieces.  I'll try to find out what it is and let you know....maybe that would help also!
