I suffer from horrible migraines. I started taking elavil 1.5 years ago. I weighted 125 and 5'4". I have seen a lot of weight gain I'm now 155 and went from a size 10 to a size 15. I have went to a neurologist and tried every medicine possible but nothing works but the elavil. I have tried getting off of it in the pass and the headache were so bad that I ended up in the ER. I have tried weenging off the medicine slowly but I end up in bed all day and can't even tolerate the sound of someone talking and with me being a mother and wife that is just not possible. But this weight gain is out of control. I want to get off the medicine again. Is there any advice on how to do it and how to tolerate the pain of headaches? Also how long does the withdrawls last ? I have only been off for a month at the longest and I Nuer couldn't take it anymore

Welcome to the forum.

I would find a neurologist that works with people just for migraine pain, perhaps at a hospital.

I have been diagnosised with 4 diff migraine 'producers'. Went to John Hopkins in Md. I now see a doc at Thomas Jeff Univ in Phila Pa that maint my combo of meds, tweeks it when needed.

225mg tomopax daily
150mg propanol daily
60mg cymbalta for pain daily

imitrex for break through

T3 for combo head pain.

Hope this helps.

Hello.... I've been on and off Elavil for 20 years taking anywhere from 50mg to 300mg for chronic cluster headaches. New meds seem to work for a while, but I found myself asking to be put back on it, since it seems to be the only preventive medication that works. In 2010 I was referred to a pain management doctor who treats my headaches with Botox. I currently take 75mg of Elavil and 150 units of Botox every 3 months. The only downfall is the length of time it takes for Botox to work; 3 treatments and approximately 9 months. I tend to get frequent daily headaches, but they are tolerable and about 6 weeks of cluster headaches a year, which feels like a lifetime but better than 52 weeks that I dealt with for years. I never noticed any weight gain until I started to get Relief from Botox and became pain free.

I took elavil once for headaches. Made me crave sugar like crazy! Also got me very high.

Turned out my headaches were sinus infections.
