Hi All,

So I posted last week and after having my Depakote (3 at bedtime = 1500mg) dropped down to 1 at night of 500 mg due to the extreme nausea AND the fact that it wasn't doing a thing to make my migraines (scale of 1 to 10 = 15) even go away for a day. So my neurologist finally added Verapemil 120 mg to start, 1 every morning. I took my first one this morning. (I have the start of a migraine as every morning lingering in the back ground just waiting to break through).. My rescue meds are Indomethacin 25 mg (3 x day) and Sumatriptan Injection.

I feel like a lost cause here.. I have neck pain as well so I have to find the time for PT to help with the neck pain while already going into work daily to take my oldest son to camp now that school is out and work full time and I have a 2 year old at home. So much to do and so little time and so much pain!!

So if anyone can share with me their experience when they first started on Verapmil, side effects and how you knew it was working.

I do also take 200 mg of Topamax daily, Magnesium 500mg, Vitamin B-Complex, Folic Acid and a Multi-Vitamin. I've done research for natural remedies to help with daily terrible migraines.

Next step us an MRI of my cervical spine and of my head. The past one I had showed white spots which my neuro told me are common in migraine sufferers BUT the last person I said that to (who gets an occasional migraine turned their head at me)... So when that happens he wants to make sure nothing has changed up there...

So any input is greatly appreciated. . What to or not to expect. Relief or no relief?? Tears or a smile??

I just want, no I NEED my life back..

If there are any other suggestions please do not hesitate to share!!!

First, let me start by saying that I completely feel your pain, literally. I have gone through the gambit of medications and treatments for migraines as well.
I am lucky to have a neurologist that suffers from migraines so is understanding.
With that being said, over the years I have tried everything. I was getting a migraine each month, right around "that time of the month", due to hormone issues.
My neuro, worked with my PCP and OBGYN, and between them, decided to put me on BC all the time, I don't take the week off. Every 4 to 6 months I take a week off of BC. But besides that, I take it constantly. Taking birthcontrol all the time has its issues, but far less than my brain exploding.
Also, I had my B12 level tested, and it was nearly non exsistant, so now I take 1000mg of B12 daily, which has helped a little bit, and even a little bit is a lot when it comes to constant migraine pain.
I have hydro for break though pain, and maxalt and axert for the big gun medication, Phenergan for nausea, and diazepam for help when need. As far as daily, I have taken the depekot years ago, and Topamax as well. Now I am taking a beta blocker. The beta blocker doesn't seem to help as much as Topamax, but works far better than any anti depressant that I have ever used.
Non medication, I have found warm showers, just sit and let the water hit your neck head and shoulders. Also try drinks or smoothies made with pineapple, cucumber, and turmeric. I have been having one every morning, and it is helping slightly.
As far a starting verapamil, I tried it for sometime, but got little to no relief, and couldn't justify the cost with no real help to show with it. did made me a bit unable to wind down sometimes so watch out with that.

Verapamil for me is a miracle drug. I started it for blood pressure almost 3 years ago, I didn't know about them prescribing it for migraines and cluster headaches at the time. It wasn't until about a month later that I noticed I hadn't had any migraines or even a headache. I used to get 5-7 migraines a month and headaches every day, since starting veramapil I haven't had a single migraine and only a hand full of simple headaches. It is a God send and I LOVE it.

I didn't have any side effects from starting it.
