I am totally at my wits end because I just don't know what to do anymore. I have suffered with migraines infrequently all my life, but for the past year or so I have been getting them up to 2-3 times a week and they are ruining my life.

I have been trying to find out if there is a particular trigger but I'm beginning to think they are related to my hormones. I have poly cystic ovaries and my periods can sometimes be irregular but other than that I don't suffer with any symptoms. (I don't have acne or struggle with my weight and I only get a little more body hair than usual) I am not on the pill as it does give me very bad acne and I have tried so many. I am unable to take the combined pill because of the migraines so I'm stuck there.
I have been using a diary app on my phone to keep a record of both my migraines and periods and there is definitely some kind of link between them both. I tend to get migraines every other day after I've ovulated, and they will subside when I actually come on.

I have been to my doctor many times, and on the last occasion I mentioned the diaries I've been keeping and the link between my periods, but he just prescribed Sumatriptan and said he wanted to try to see if it would break the cycle (even though I've been prescribed it before and it makes me feel awful to the point where I'd rather deal with the pain)

I can't take Migraleve or any opiate as it makes me vomit (even the anti sickness ones)
I find the best way to get some relief is by taking ibuprofen as soon as I get the aura and putting an ice pack on my neck and my feet in hot water. But I can't do this when I am at work!

I am of course going to go back to my doctor but I really just wanted some advice from people who might have experienced what I have.
Is there really anything I can take to regulate my hormones to stop my migraines?

Any advice is massively appreciated! Thank you in advance!

You may want to talk to your GYN about this.

I would look for another Neurologist that listens to your more. I went through 7 till I found the one that finally helped me.

I wish you the best

Your symptoms sound just like mine (my post about this is on page 2 I believe). I was at my wits end as well.

Here's what has helped me (not with the migraines as much as the auras.)

500mg magnesium taken nightly.

16mg b2 nightly.

Knock on wood, the auras haven't occurred for over two weeks now. I pray it continues. I also hope you find some relief. *hugs*

Sorry for the late reply.

I went on holiday shortly after I posted and I didn't get one for the entire time I was there (2 weeks), but got one 2 days after I came back. I didn't get another one for 2 weeks but now they are definitely back :(

I had 3 within the space of 24 hours the other day, with the third one being the worst. I usually feel nauseated but I had horrible vertigo and had to glue my face to the toilet.

I managed to see another doctor and had an in depth conversation about what to try next, but he just put me on 10mg of amitriptyline to be taken at night.

I have read up on it and the dose is low, it's just I'm not keen on taking it because of the negative side effects. I'm not depressed either, and I'm scared my sex drive will go. (I have been on anti depressants before and they made me feel worse)
That being said I don't feel any different than I normally do so far but it is early days.

I think I've come to the conclusion that I'm more prone to migraines around my period, and stress makes it worse. And because I stress about it, it's a never ending vicious cycle.

I will try the b vitamins and magnesium, I'll also make an effort to go to the gym after work and these pills make me sleepy anyway so more sleep won't be a problem!

Thank you for taking time to read my wall of rant, reading stuff on this forum has given me some help and I think I might actually get on top of my migraines one day lol.

Edit: My doctor mentioned that there seems to be a link between heart murmurs and migraines. I don't know if that will help anyone.
