I have lurked on this board before looking for answers for my husband.  He just called and said for about 5 minutes he had double vision.  Is this migraine related?  He has had the auras before with wavy lines, etc. but never double vision.  I'm scared it's something more than migraines.  He's at the dr. right now.

Best wishes.  I'm sure they will order a CT scan. I have seen where simple things such as bad sinuses can cause double vision.  Maybe it was a strange aura kind of thing and not double vision.  Please let us know the outcome.

YES, YES, YES, YES, AND YES.....

Double vision can be a common problem with migraines, especially with migraines with aura...(again, not saying that people who have migraines with aura can not have double vision)

I have had that problem a lot...I have to try to blink a lot and try to focus....Double Vision can also be a side effect of medications for migraines preventatives and abortives...

I have also passed out/blacked out on occasion. I have on several occasions, with a migraine, hit my head on things...like very simple random things, its almost like I don't know how big my head is (how dumb does that sound?!!?)

There are many things that a migraine can affect that you wouldn't neccessilarily think about...

DOUBLE VISION is one of those....Still see a doctor and follow all precautions in case that is not all that is going on, but it very well may be the problem.

I have read probably 50 books specifically on headaches and migraines and if I don't know the answer I can find it for you or know someone who can!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi msand,

Welcome. I generally suffer from double vision and other visual disturbances with my migraines. My neurologist explains that it comes from the blodd vessels next to my optic nerve swelling and putting pressure on it or them as it may be with double vision.

I take a triptan (i.e. zomig, imitrex, amerge) and that usually stops it. It can be very disconcerting especially when I'm driving. It's happened so long I have grown accustomed to it and make sure I carry my medication with me.

It's always a good idea for your husband to see the doctor whenever his headaches change, or the symptoms. But if this is associated with his migraines there is nothing to be worried about - so says my neurologist. I think this is my most disconcerting symptom. It's probably the symptom I bring up the most. My neurologist doesn't do MRIs or CAT scans he has done other movement tests coupled with my history - the most telling for me is that the symptoms come and go - and is confident there is no tumor or more serious condition involved. All doctors and patients are different.

Please let us know how your husband is doing.  I try to believe no news is good news.  I had a bout of double vision almost a year ago.  I could blink it away briefly but it scared me half to death.  Believe it or not........wait for it.....here it comes...

it was all chalked up due to...here it comes...

anxiety!  Xanax fixed it. MRI sealed the deal.  Wishing you the best!

My husband didn't really find out much at the doctor. She seemed to think it was a migraine side effect. Funny thing is he never got a headache that day. That's the only day last week he didn't have one. It may have been from all the Imitrex he has taken. It only lasted about 5 minutes then went away completely. He is having some blood work done, seeing an eye doctor and then maybe I can talk him into seeing his neurologist. Thanks for your concern.

Good thing is that it went away.  I am no Doctor but typically if double vision is caused by something serious, it may linger around for more than a few minutes.

My daughter (21) never a history of headaches has had double vision for 3 weeks,  the doctor says it is a ocular migraine with no pain.  she was given butalb and it had no effects on eyes but said it made her feel weird.  since I know nothing of migraines can they last weeks?  went to eye doctor and he gave all clear and said to see GP. went to GP and thye had no idea and sent to neuro.  Neuro thinks migraine.  Not sure if she should go to school as I can't drive her everyday.   Any thoughts?

Your daughter's situation sounds just like what we are going thru with my 15 year old son. This is the second time he has had double vision. It happened to him again the beginning of December (almost a year to the day) that it happened last year. He gets intermittent vertical double vision that comes and goes and is usually worse in the morning when at school. Especially when he looks down and back up again towards the teacher.

It went away one day last year after roughly 3 weeks, this year it has laster longer and is more frequent. We have been thru every type of test known to mankind and have seen many types of doctors including neuro's, neurosurgeons, neuroopthamalogists, opthamologists, etc. No one can find anything wrong, but in a way, I am very thankful for that. It is just frustrating not being able to be able to get some answers for him. He has been such a trooper, but I know how much this must stink to have this daily.

Our GP is suggesting that this maybe a form of migraine, for which I suffer from. He claims he had no headache prior to the onset this time, but had one a day or two before the double vision last year. We are kind of learning to live with it and hoping daily it just goes away. We are currently at 6 weeks now. I have read that adolescents can develop an opthamapolegic migraine and get a 4th cranial nerve palsy that causes this type of double vision. Just figure I would let you know that you are not alone with this and I understand your level of concern.
