I’m 3 months pregnant and have had a migraine for a week. Vomiting, sever pain in the front of my head, and difficult to function. Tylenol barely takes the edge off, and that’s only if I can keep it down.

I was prescribed Rizatriptan in the past but it’s not safe during pregnancy. I should have called my doc yesterday but now it’s Saturday and it’s still pretty bad. I’m not sure if they can give me anything but I’m considering going to a urgent care. Do you think a) the visit would be worth it and b) will they be able to prescribe me anything while pregnant?

So Sorry.

If it is still so bad get to the ER, you do not want to dehydrate! Urgent care will only send you to the ER.

Heat works for me, but ice works also for other people, try both, you will know right away what feels better

U can try Vicks vapor rub under your nose sometimes that helps a lot.

Peace and comfort

Congratulations on the pregnancy! I don't know anything about what's safe during pregnancy, but you should go to a neurologist and discuss. I would imagine hormone shifts can cause bad migraines. I get them from pms.

I have used the Vic’s rub and that’s helped a little. I also use a rice heating pad thing that you put in the microwave. It’s not bad enough where I have to go to the ER. I mix half sugar Gatorade with water and drink that bc I get dehydrated easily (I have no large intestine and don’t absorb liquids as others). That has helped a little I think.

I did have a headache doc appt back in July that I canceled bc My headaches were getting better. At that point I hadn’t had a migraine in months. Now they are back with a vengeance. I shouldn’t have cancelled bc it took me 3 months to get that appt. I called my primary to see if there was anything else she might prescribe. Ugh.

That stinks. It's something I would do too. We are always quick to think "hmm, I am better" and I love to avoid an appointment with a doctor since it gives me anxiety, but yes, these specialists are not the easiest to get appointments with. Actually my OB was usually pretty good with hormonal issues, maybe if you can't get help from the GP, you can ask your OB... it's always good for us migraine sufferers to have some options for treatment. Frustrating with pregnancy though, I am sure the options are more limited. I have been getting a migraines recently and I'm also putting off going.

Hi doggie do-
Congratulations on your pregnancy! There are a couple meds that are safe during your pregnancy.
I recommend calling them ASAP for a visit to discuss what is appropriate. If they are unwilling or unable,
I would go to the nearest ER. Good luck with that beautiful baby inside.
Don’t worry, they can help you feel better.

Thank you. It was helpful. I didn’t some research online and found a place somewhat close by and made an appt for next week (5 days away) after work. So I don’t need to miss work, which is great. Also, it’s a doc that used to work at the headache center at a major hospital near by, so she has a lot of experience. She sent me a form online to document my medical history, so that was reassuring. It’s always nice when you don’t have to fill out 8 pages of paperwork when you get there.

As for my symptoms. I’m still vomiting daily- the other day, I got sick 3x, but again that could be from morning sickness. Not sure since I’m 13 weeks now. I’d think that would be over. The headache went away on Friday but came back today. Hoping to keep it at bay until my appt.

I work at a college and classes start on Monday. We’re going to be super busy so I can’t imagine things will get less stressful for me. Also found out my 12 year old dog is ill again. Taking him to Tufts in MA (we live in CT) hoping that they can continue to treat him. All this at once is probably not good for my head either.

Great job on finding a doc!

Try to drink water, Gatorade have food coloring in it. That is a trigger for me. Sets off violent pain.
See if you feel better drinking fresh lemon water with the rind smashed a little.

Morning sickness can last longer than the first 12 weeks, depends on what is going on with mommy!

Peace comfort and strength DD

The doc was wonderful. She spent an hour with me and said I have classic migraines. She said some other stuff that you all might find helpful for yourselves too.

My mom gets headaches and the doc says it tends to run in the family. She said in terms of treatments. What ever works for one family members tends to work for the other as well. So she suggested to talk to my mom and see what treatments have worked for her. That’ll help us determine what we want to use for treatment and stuff. Just as a ballpark.

She also said to take Benedryl and Tylenol together before bed. The Benedryl is a diff type of medication that hits the headache in a diff way. She says when people go to the ER for headaches that’s the first thing they usually give them. She said do that for a few nights until I’m completely without a headache for 24 hours. Since my migraine is now it’s starting to break up - meaning I started the day without one and the other day I didn’t have one at all, that she thinks it’s on it’s way out. Meaning this migraine cycle is breaking. Thank God! She said it will go away on its own eventually, but it’s all about treating me so I can handle it and “live normally” until it’s gone. Like how can we manage my headache better.

Some other options are to do a nerve block with just lidocaine. They sometimes add Phrenilin into the nerve block by I checked with my OB and they don’t think that is safe. The lidocaine is fine but not with the P stuff.

And the third line of defense would be a day or two of Reglan to see if that kicks it.

Oberall, I’m so glad I went! She was amazing and gave me hope that I don’t have to live with these debilitating headaches. She said pregnancy usually has the positive side effect of improving people’s migraines and women usually get less of them. In this case, she feels we just have to kick his migraine to the curb and fingers crosses I’m good until I deliver. After I deliver there are a to of pharmaceutical treatment options.

So glad to so hear it!

I get the lidocaine shots in the back of my head, once a month, but still get one or two days of 10+ pain a month, and I use THC oil. when ever my daily pain goes over a 6. between the two, I am able to function well.

True it runs in the family, my mother have migraines, doc gave her funenal.

I wish you Peace

I have heard THC oil works well! Can’t use that right now tho.

My migraine has gone away and come back almost every day. I’m keeping track of them with this worksheet my doctors gave me. Since Saturday (it’s thurs now) I’ve had a headache every day. I take the Benedryl every night with Tylenol and it goes away but by mid morning it comes back.

Not sure if it’s time to call her and set something up for the shots or the Reglan. Their office isn’t open on fridays or Mondays so at this point I wouldn’t get in until next week at the earliest. I’m just so tired of having a headache. It’s not a horrible migraine- it’s prob a level 4, or 5 at most and the Tylenol takes the edge off. When do I? My hubby thinks I should give it another week since the doc says the headaches are already in the process of breaking up. You know though, it’s exhausting and impacting every aspect of my life. I just want it to go away.

I call and leave a message, today is Tuesday, so I hope you have called.

Please do not minimize you pain, by being brave and toughing it out, we tend to do that, when we realize we can still sort of function.

There is no need for this. The lidocaine shots in the back of the head work for me. I still get them.
I do get pain once or twice a week that is bad, that is what the THC is for, However, there is a nasal powder that I use also

ask your doc about this. I use this if I am out and the pain get to a 5 and I know it will go up.

I hope this helps you.

Thanks. Yes I waited until this week to call. I thought they were closed on Monday and open on tuesday but I mixed up the days. So I’ll have to call again tomorrow. I tracked my headaches in sept only. And I’ve only been without a headache for 2 days out of 11. That’s unacceptable. I’ll mention your suggestion to my doc. Thanks! Hopefully I can get in for the shot this week. They have weird hours though. Fingers crossed they can fit me in!
