I suffer from migranes, I get the pain on the left side of my head.  For the last two days I have been getting these sharp eletrical like shocks that shoot threw my head but on the right side.  The pain is unbearable.  Thank god it only last a few seconds.  These "shocks" happen about 10 times an hour.  Has any one esle experienced this or know what this is?

Just wondering, are you weaning off any SSRI's. Shocks are really typical of this.

no I am not. MY current medications are effexor, topamax and Klonopin as needed and Midrin as need, which does nothing.

hi wenmarie, when you say shocks, could you maybe describe them to me, where exactly do they occur and how long do they last for?

sorry not being nosy, just curious?

They are quick, maybe 3 second, horrificly painful "shock" like feelings that go through my head. Its like when you chew on tin foil when you have a filling, but in your head. I do not get them every day. But, the days that I do get them,  they happen frequently.

wenmarie hi,--you asked about shocks shooting through "your" head, I too have had this experience.  For me it usually starts in my head on the right side and then shoots across my head and times down my neck.  In 1999 I had a headache for a month straight.  I self medicated with excederine.  As time passed The shocks and headache became worse.  It got to the point where I thought someone hit me in the back on the head and I fell to the ground. I actually heard what I thought was my skull cracking.  The pain was beyond anything I could  ever imagin.  That was on a Monday. By Wed. It happened again so I went to ER.  By Friday I was admitted. Nothing would "break" the headache. Finally they gave me DHEA and it started to go away.  It took another two weeks to go completely away.  I am telling you this because my Neuro & Gen Prac. DR kept telling me to Never let a headache continue for that long ever again.  I would let your Neuro know about the changes in your pain and investigate a pain management with your physican.  I wish you a quick resolution & will keep you in my thoughts and prays.  All the best.  Always

Hi - I am a brand new member.  Just signed up when I read this message about the electric shocks going thru the head.  This has happened to me several times, most recently last month during a 4 day migraine.  I was having a headache that was typical, one sided pounding pain for days...then on the third day at night, I started to have these shooting pains in my head.  The way I described them was like a laser light show...only the beam of light was shooting pain.  They went from left to right, right to left and one even went straight down from the top of my head inside and thru the head.  It was quick, like you said - seconds, but it is definitely jolting, I jumped and jerked like something shocked me.  What could this be???  I have not really read anything about this symptom.

I've had migraines since I was 12.  Just had another one that lasted 4 days again this month...now I can't sleep!

Let me know what you think...

Thanks!

I am new to this forum. Even though I do have migraines very frequently, I usually visit the Fibromyalgia forum. I, too have a problem with shooting pains sort of like an electrical shock. I could never get anyone to understand when I tried to describe them. Mine feel like something is breaking loose in my head. It makes me a little scared. It kind of feels like something nerve-related. I have never mentioned it to my doctor. I have enough problems getting them to understand my complaints in other areas. I am going to an appointment tomorrow. I will try to remember to mention this to her then. I have also been taking Exedrine Migraine. Nothing the doctor has given me has ever helped. The Exedrine keeps me awake, because it is full of caffeine. Then, the next day I have the headache again. They usually last about three days or so.

Someone please let me know if you get any answers for this.

Does it happen when you bend your head forward??

Shocks throughout the body (not necessarily head) are a sign of L'Hermittes sign (I may have spelled this wrong)

I am not sure if you were asking me or not, but I will answer you anyway.  Mine can happen anytime.  I can just be sitting still and all of a sudden I will have a shock that goes through my head.  It has happened in my head and in my right arm.  The last one was about three days ago, so it doesn't happen very often.  It is just kind of scary.

hello- i have joined this last night looking for info on colon issues.

i saw shocks and knew exactly what you were talking about- actually relieved because people think i am insane when i try to describe them. i have migraine but got them under control.

the shocks remind me of lightning going off in the brain- i can almost visualize it. a neuro guy told me that we all have different sensations- some people can hear/feel their heart beat in their ears. he didn't know and hadn't experienced this. people think u r insane if u try to tell them...

i suppose that maybe it is some kind of seizure type thing. like someone flipped off the lights for a sec. mine stay in the brain. they only seem to occcur with me late at night or when i am over tired and getting to sleep for a nap.

scariest thing i have ever felt- know u r not crazy or alone.

My mother has suffered from these for years. She has since been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

During my research, I have read that these shocks, the Lhermitte's phenomenon is common with SSRI medications such as effexor and lexapro. It is also a common symptom of multiple sclerosis.

I have started suffering these shocks myself. It really is frightening to get them. My doctor has been monitoring me for MS for years after my legs have steadily shown a decrease in strength, some double vision, and unexplained blackouts. I haven't been on SSRI meds for years now, so that is ruled out. Going to call my neurologist on Monday to get in and get seen. Last MRI done was 2 years ago and was negative. My mom had MS symptoms for over 10 years and finally last year the MRI finally showed the white matter spots common in MS patients.

I hate to say that this too is common with some types of migraines (and also with some medications as you have already mentioned)
