toothaches and headaches- any help?

A few months ago I had a severe throbbing toothache. When I went to the dentist he said that I had no problems with my teeth and that it could be an allergic reaction. But the pain would come and go a lot and usually would bring about a horrible headache on the side of my head that the tooth pain was on. When I would lie down it would get much worse and sometimes I couldn't sleep at all. Eventually I was taking advil every day for the pain. Then it stopped. But now it's back again. This time the toothache feels like a painful ache that spreads throughout my gums on one side of my mouth. I always get the awful headaches with it too. I know that the headaches could be a tumor which is what my mom died of but it seems unlikely since they feel like thier due to the toothache. Does anyone have any clues as to whether it really could be an allergic reaction? Has any one heard of symptoms like this? Nothing I due short of medicating help it go away.

Hey ive had headaches for a few years now and it has only recently been brought to my attention the link between headaches and teeth grinding. I read about it on this website: http://alternative-medicine-and-health.com/conditions/tmj.htm Its worth checking into and i think you should get a CT or Mri scan just incase. hope you get relief

Wow. That sounds a lot like what i have. I know for a fact that my jaw alignment is way off, wayyyy offf. But it didn't mention that mouth pain was a symptom. Still, all the little tests do check out and so I'm going to buy a mouth guard and stop sleeping on my side and see what happens. I've only put off getting my jaw fixed because it will involve costly and painful jaw surgery that I cant afford now.

Still, if anyone has any other ideas I'm more than willing to hear them.

sleepless night with mouth pain. OHHHHH...I feel really awful. When I lie down my head aches and my mouth is on fire with pain. It goes away when I sit up for a while so I just can't sleep. I tried anbesol to numb it long enough to fall asleep but it quickly wears off. I'm trying to sleep on my back but the back of my head feels painful, sore and stiff cause I'm not used to it. help anyone?

I have recently FINALLY gotten rid of my headaches by going to the dentist and getting fit for a bite splint. I don't know if you have dental insurance, but if you do, please see a dentist and get one of these. They are expensive so if you don't have insurance there are other options. Anyways, its just a hard plastic almost retainer like thing that you put on your top teeth only at night. It covers all the way back to your molars. My bite is totally off on one side, my teeth don't even touch in the back on the left. The bite splint makes an even planed surface for you at the bottom of your teeth so that when you do bite down or clench during the night, all the pressure is dispersed equally throughout your jaw. It also prevents clenching down really hard (which tenses your temporalis muscles all night, thus causing the headaches in the morning).

I have been using this now for about 2 and a half weeks, along with a nightly dose of .5mg of clonazepam. I used to suffer with daily, chronic, obnoxious tension headaches, and now they're totally and completely gone.

PS - see an oral surgeon about the tooth pain - it could be more than clenching!!

hey im glad the mouth splint is working for you. it has been my first night using the mouth splint and my jaw and headaches are already feeling much better. this muscle tension in the jaw now explains why i always have a tightness in the neck and shoulder muscles

Just a quick note: TMJ and Headaches are common together. I wake up in the middle of the night clenching/grinding my teeth and then wake up in the morning and my jaw will pop really loud (people can hear it in the other room) the night splints really do work well and I have even had to take xanax to relax when stressors in my life were really high.

Hello hopeful, I just wanted to ask...ive got  chronic headaches all the time and i think it is a result of TMJ  ...how long did it take after wearing the splint for you to get rid of your headache? please reply, im really glad to hear this has worked for you... no one should have to suffer with these headaches, thanks

I got the splint about 3 and a half weeks ago. I think after about 3 or 4 nights the temporalis muscles on my head (the ones that cause the tension headaches) finally stopped aching. They used to be sore to the touch from the clenching at night, but now they hardly ever hurt. Rarely do I ever wake up with a headache (as I used to do EVERY DAY). I also take Klonopin every night, so the combo of the splint and the klonopin works great for me. I do still get an occasional headache, like later in the day when I've had a stressful day, but its maybe only once a week - and compared to every day all day, thats a HUGE improvement in my book!!!

In my opinion, stress relief and a good bite splint are the best ways to get rid of tension headaches!!!! :)

Im wearing the splint all the time now and definately feeling some improvement im hoping i wake up tomorrow without a headache i havent done that in nearly 4 years now! as i live in the uk this is going to be the 3rd night with the splint...i cant wait to see what happens im going to take some inflammatory tablets as that seems to work before i sleep... i love this website, cheers

I went into the dentist's office just two weeks ago because I thought I was going to need a referral to the endodontist for a root canal - it turned out that one of my teeth, in their ever moving mode, came to a place where when I bit down on it and clenched my teeth (which I do at night, some nights more than others) it affected me all the way to a severe headache and horrific jaw and tooth pain. He took an xray just in case it was the tooth and then ground down the tooth with the drill (we won't talk about the bill that came) but that was the best fix I had...it worked. I had been having the pain and headaches for weeks, I was just finally at the place where I couldn't take it anymore and I thought it was getting really bad. I have been dx with tmj, but I also cannot have anything in my mouth that goes too far back, it makes me feel like I am choking, so I tried the over the counter ones and cut them down as small as I could and it still didn't work, the reflex there is too sensitive. But the amazing thing is, the dentist just drilling down this tooth did such a good job that the pain in basically gone, and I was convinced I needed a root canal and was going down that painful road and suffered for weeks with the headaches and pain on that side of the face and this is all it was. I love it when it's simple, it's so seldom!

I can say i honestly feel the same way it always starts at a certain times and now its start to give me an ear ache as well its get to the point where when i breath in the cold air hurts it and everytime i get ready to go to the dentist it just goes away i have no clue what to do but i know it ruins my whole day.

Mariska,  I have the exact same symptons.... right to the 'T'....  Did you EVER find out what was the problem????  I need help badly.  I don't want to go to the hospital to get a CT scan if I don't have to.
