Hey guys,

Yesterday I went to the Pain Clinic at the University of Virginia Medical Center (an hour away from my house) for my follow-up set of Occipital Nerve Injections for my chronic migraines.  The doctor I saw, when I got the first round of shots, said that usually the first set doesn't usually work right away, so I would need a follow-up set of injections, and a referral to see a Neurologist there at UVA.

Well yesterday, the doctor I saw on the first trip was nowhere to be seen.  I had a raging migraine at the time, a combination of bad weather and TMJ.  I saw a different doctor, who went through my whole history of my migraines, something I did the first time I was there.  He told me he needed to confer with another doctor and would be right back.

Well, I never saw him again, but his colleague showed up instead.  She said that since I didn't get any real benefit from the first round of shots, she said she didn't think another set of shots would help.  She asked if I had an appointment with the Neurologist yet.  I told her I did, but it wasn't until MARCH 7th!!!

I asked her what I was supposed to do for pain until I saw the neurologist, and she just basically just shrugged her shoulders.  I was just supposed to "hang in there" until my appointment, and make sure I was on his "cancellation list".

I went all that way, had a splitting migraine, and got absolutely no treatment at all.  I was so upset.

Once I got back home, I had a med check appointment with my shrink.  He just ran through my list of meds and asked if anything different was going on.  I told him about being cut off cold turkey from my migraine meds, and he flipped through my file and said it didn't make any since to him, but didn't offer any suggestions on how to remedy the situation.

Directly after my session, I had my Dad drive me to the ER.  I signed in and sent him home once I got moved back into a cubicle.  I told him I'd call him when I was ready to go home.  I saw a new doctor, who gave me a hard time about my history and the number of times I've had to go to the ER.  I explained that all my meds had been cut off due to a policy change at my clinic, but he wasn't very good with his bedside manor.  He did order me a shot of Nubain/Phenergan, which is the first real relief I've had in quite a while, and gave me a prescription for Ultracet, which I needed when I woke up this morning.

I have an appointment with my PCP on Monday, and I'm going to see if I can get her to give me a short term reprieve, and get prescriptions for my migraine meds, just until I can get to see the new Neurologist in March.  I doubt it will work, but it's not like anything can get worse.

Keep your fingers crossed for me,

Leigh Ann cool

Hi Leigh Ann,

So sorry you have had such a hard time with this. Did you feel that the nerve blocks would have worked enough to give some real relief for a time? I do understand how you feel as I do not have anything other than O2 to abort attacks as none of the other meds work for me, and this week when I really needed the O2, that didn't work either!!!! (I haven't had anything except O2 since September and I have to wait until the end of Feb for the all clear to take triptans again!!!)

Thankfully I did get the nerve block on Tuesday, after a day in agony, but this was my first time so I don't know how it is going to work for me, but so far, so good, just a few niggles!!!

I will be thinking of you on Monday, and sincerely hope that someone does something to help you with this!!!

take care

Ann

Hi Leigh Ann,

I'm so sorry you're still struggling to get the medications you need. I will keep my fingers crossed that you get to see the neurologist sooner rather than later.

Just an update. I emailed my original pain clinic doctor to find out why she wasn't present for my second appointment. I also asked why the doctors that were there did not complete the scheduled procedure. I am waiting for a response. Will post again when I hear back from the doctor.

Leigh Ann,

I really hope you hear back from your doctor--I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through trying to get the care you need!

Take Care!
