I am new to this forum. I am almost 28 and haven't suffered with migraines long, other than menstraul migraines. But I just have sort of dealt with them. Recently I have been getting migraines more often. Even more recently I got a migraine that I have had for 8 days now. It pretty much left me debilitatated. The doc prescribed me some Imitrex which did nothing. Then I got a shot of Demoral and Phenergan, which let me sleep peacefully and wake up with a miagraine still. He gave me some samples of Relpax, which i dug into and helped, but the price tag is so high, I am not sure I can depend on that daily. He also put me on 25 mg of topamax to help prevent them. So far I still have a migraine and am at my wits end. I guess I am scared because my mother has gotten a migraine every day for as long as she can remember.

I did do some research as well on vitamins, so I did up my B-2 and magnesium and am taking feverfew and seratonin. Hopefully I will find what will help my body. I think the biggest thing is to cut out the caffiene. I am not a coffee drinker, but do have my fair share of diet soda, but that is coming to a quick stop. I will do what it takes to get and stay pain free.

I don't have questions, just sort of venting and looking for support.

Hi Holmsla,

Welcome to Healing Well. Sorry you are having such a tough time at the moment. Stopping anything containing caffeine abruptly can induce headache so be careful that you are not unwittingly making the headache worse, slow down gradually!!

Has your Doctor told you to gradually increase the Topamax? Just a tip with this, make sure you drink plenty of water whilst on this drug!

Hang in there, you have support here now, take care

My doctor has not told me to increase my dosage of the topamax, but I do have a follow up appointment with him in a month so perhaps he will at that time. That is if I make it until then. If I continue at the rate I currently am, I will be paying another visit to him as I am completely miserable. I did have a good day yesterday so I really thought I was getting better, until I got up today and it jsut got worse and worse. It is hard to deal with this with a full time job as an editor, where I read the majority of the day. I make sure to take plenty of breaks.

As far as the caffeine, I really don't drink a lot of soda, though I have noticed lately to be drinking a little bit more. I did notice immediately after taking the topamax that the taste of the soda is no longer appealing, which isn't a bad thing. I still like chocolate and have no problem having a piece or two now and again.

I broked down and took a Relpax, so hopefully it will help. If not, looks like I have to call the doc back. I don't want to have day 9 of migraine. Thanks for your help and for listening.

Just a tip, a lot of sufferers have a problem with sensitivity to the 3 C's - Cheese, Chocolate and Citrus!!! While your head is so bad, it may well be worth cutting these out of your diet for a while to see if there is any difference before gradually introducing them again and noting any changes!!

Topamax will alter your sense of taste!

take care

Hello homesla,

Welcome to Healing Well. I am sorry to hear you are suffering. In case it makes you feel better a lot of us on this forum experience the same thing.

There are a lot better medications out there than when your mom was young so hopefully you won't experience migraines forever like she has.

I found a website at the following site: http://www.freemedicinefoundation.com/ which outlines how people in the US can get free medications. Does this apply to you?

Keep us up to date. I hope you feel better soon.

Hi There, I am a newbie as of this morning, My name is Paula and I am a nurse who also has Migraines...though mine are due to the fact that I have RSDS. The very best medication that I have taken for my migraines is ZOMIG  (a prescription med) It has saved my day many many times. It can be taken at the onset of pain and if the pain isn't relieved, then you may take another pill every 5 minutes until it is gone, but if it's NOT gone after 5 pills, you must go to the ER for medical eval.

   Good luck to you,

I have a great home remedy for you that may help you with your new found migraines. When I first started getting migraines, my doctor told me that putting ice on my trigger points would really help me out (most peoples triggers points are on the side of their face by their temples). It really helped me out but it was really annoying because I had to constantly hold icepacks up to my face, and my arms would get extremely tired. I went online and found this product called the IceCaddy. The IceCaddy is a velcro sling that goes around your face and lets you ice your trigger points completely hands free! It has two pouches on either side and even comes with two icepacks for your convenience.  If you use the IceCaddy and couple that with doctor prescribed medication, it could really help out in the long run.  I found that a great home remedy along with some simple medication is better for me than some more powerful medicine.
