Hello all

I was wondering if anyone here has tapered off of amatryptaline(sp?).  I currently take 100 mg of it and in the future I would like to have children and I know this is 1 meds I need to try to get off of before hand.  I was wondering if anyone here has tapered off of it and the dosages and the length of time it took?

Thanks
Stef

I'd recommend talking to your doctor about this. I was on a considerably lower dose of amitriptyline and went off it slowly with my neurologist's guidance, but it still made it pretty hard to sleep -- I'd gotten very dependent on it for sleeping. My headaches got worse, too, so I went back on it at a low dosage.

Especially given your rather complex prescription regimen, I'd think you'd want to consult with your doctor and/or pharmacist before making any significant changes.

Good luck on the baby front!

I would call too, maybe the nurse could even help by talking with the doctor if you explained the situation as to why. I'm going off medications right now, but under the guidance of my doctor-some just can have to many effects, and it's best to keep them in the loop in case you have any adverse effects, etc!

Take care and best wishes with the future baby...

I will be discussing it with my doctor I just basically would like a time frame for getiing weaned off of it.  Example: cut down 10 mg per week etc..

I think 10 mg every couple weeks is probably a reasonable guess, although you might want to go slower if you have trouble sleeping. I think that's about the pace I dropped my dosage. At your dosage, I would imagine you're pretty sleep-dependent on it.

But since this is an anti-depressant, you want to be VERY careful -- changing your dose too quickly could have mood altering effects that you might not be able to see in yourself.

Take care,

Mark

Hi drangonfly,

I would be cautious as the others have said about tapering down with the Amitriptyline, and I do believe 10mg every 2 weeks is about right, it would be well advised to check with your Doctor that this is the best way forward for you before you start though!

take care
