I was wondering if you can have a migrain and tension headache at the same time?  Lately I have been really sick with my Crohn's disease had to have surgery etc.  When I have a fever I tend to have headaches.  They are limited to my right temple and behind my right eye as well as the back of my neck.  So I wonder if I have migraines only or a combination making me wonder which meds to take.

I have had migraines and tension headaches at the same time and have been told by my Neurologist that one can trigger the other.  The migraine medication can get rid of the migraine but not to headache, as can the tension headache, but I have not had any luck finding a medication that can get rid of both.

Recently I went into the hospital for my Crohn's disease and had to have 2 surgeries. The initial reason I went in was because I was having migraines and tension headaches combined with a fever. Due to my meds I went right in when my fever went over 102. Each time I even get low grade fevers including today I get headaches along with the fever.

My tension headaches are always in my neck or caused my muscle spasms in my shoulder blade. My neurologist has me on tizanadine for the muscle spasms. I do find that if my excedrin tension headache pills do not help my tension headache and it is daytime I will break my tizanadine in half or in quarters to help relax those muscles.

Hi Dragonfly and Singlemom :)

I normally post in chronic pain but was checking out some of the other boards today.
If you have one medicine that gets rid of the migraine, try these two tricks for the tension headache: If you have Ben-gay or Icy Hot GENTLY rub it into your forehead and temples. Go find a dark room and take a nap for an hour or two. I like that one when I go to bed at night. The other one that works for me is getting some crushed ice in a ziploc bag -OR- a bag of frozen corn or peas. Again find a dark quiet place to laydown and put the ice across your eyes using a thin washcloth between so you dont freeze your skin. Give it about 30 - 45 minutes. Migraines run in my family and I've had a few over the years and these seem to work for me. Also its nice that there isnt any conflict with any other medicines :)

Sassy
