I have gone through the whole prescription hell of trying to find something to fend off these horrible migraines. I also have fibromyalgia and have a sleep disorder where I don't go into a deep sleep (I hardly ever dream). They have given me all kinds of sleep medications that do make me sleep, but then it's just more medications.

We were faced with losing our health insurance and I went into our local Whole Foods and asked the nutritionist if there was anything she suggested. I told her my symptoms of years of pain, not sleeping, fuzzy thinking, anxiety, etc. She immediately said you are deficient in magnesium. She directed me to a type of magnesium that dissolves in boiling water, so it gets into your system quicker. She told me to start off slow, because it can cause loose bowels. I take multivitamins and they have magnesium in them, but this type apparently gets in the system a different way.

I thought, yeah, I have tried everything else. Well, I went home and drank the magnesium tea and guess what, I dreamed, glorious dreams. And my migraine was GONE. I usually wake up with headaches and have to take something to make it through the day. I felt so good it was incredible. I kept drinking my tea every night and no more migraines. In fact, I was sleeping so much better, I felt like a hundred bucks. The magnesium seems to really put me into a deep sleep, without any pharmaceutical medications!

Then I went without it for about 4 days, and I got a migraine. I made some mag tea, drank it, laid down, slept for an hour and my headache was gone. No drugs. Just magnesium citrate. It is hard to find the powder type of magnesium, but it does get in the bloodstream faster. I haven't tried the pills, I just know the powder works for me. I wonder if there are many people with magnesium deficiency like me? I have been on magnesium for over a month now. As long as I take it daily, I don't have a migraine. I also have not woken up in the middle of the night, unable to fall back asleep. I did not have any PMS this month. My stress level has decreased and I am finally starting to feel like a normal human being again. I'm sure this isn't the "cure," for everyone, but gosh, I want to shout it from the rooftops. I feel so much better!

Sooooo happy you found something that works for you.

This sounds like something to try.  How much do you take?  And how often?  Just at nighttime/bedtime or during the evening?

I just went to town and bought some magnesium citrate that says to dissolve 1 teaspoon in 1 ounce of hot/boiling water and then add water to make the cup full and drink.  It says some people only need 1/4 teaspoon and some need 3 teaspoons a day (depends on how the bowels handle it).

I can't hardly wait to try it for a week or two and see if it helps.

Thanks so much for sharing this find.  Rhoda

I don't take the powder but take a calcium/magnesium combo as they work together best. It's the only thing that has helped to keep migraines away. I had a test done at the docs and found I was deficient in both calcium and magnesium, I have insomnia and when I do finally fall asleep, I just wake up with panic attacks so this stuff does help there too. Have you also tried 5-HTP at night? (nicknamed my "happy pill")

Keegans_mommy - what is Htp?  Also, can you get the Magnesium or Magnesium/calcium in pill form?  I don't think I could stand to drink it.  Thanks.

It's a precouser to seratonin :) And I do take the mag/calcium in pill form and take just one every morning and I am good to go! ;)

Since I started taking 5-HTP I've had about 80 percent fewer migraines and they only last for one day instead of three. I'm not up to the recommended dose of 150mg a day yet, only taking 100mg. I also take 100mg of topamax a day. Since I started the 5-HTP, I really noticed the difference in the headaches. No more waking up with that little nagging headache every day that might or might not turn into a migraine. It's really a great feeling. My mood has improved a lot too. I used to be pretty depressed most of the time. I'm much happier now.

I think I may try a magnesium supplement. I need to do some research first. What does the magnesium citrate tea taste like?
