I have had very severe head & facial migraines for 32 years. I take stronger pain pills & Migranal Nasal Spray but many, many times the migraines go way beyond those drugs. I used to have to go the ER lots !!! 5 yrs. ago I found a pain mgt. dr. in PA (i live in Ohio) who prescribed liquid DEMEROL injections to give to myself at home. What a relief - things were not perfect but it certainly made my life a lot easier. As of 1-1-07 he closed his office. It seems that "they" whoever that is has changed the rules & pain mgt. dr's here are disappearing - probably because they cannot prescribe stronger pain meds such as - demerol -etc. I understand cracking down on drugs but for those of us who have documented proof & are not seeking drugs for "pleasure' - its really unfair. I have been searching, calling , etc. for months trying to find another dr - I'm pretty great at finding out info. but this seems to be impossible. - there is no one to help - no one to prescribe what i need. just my family dr. (who has a profile) & can only give me pain pills & migranal N.S.
I wasted $250.00 on a pain mgt. dr. who was supposed to be able to help but could not. I am so frustrated, upset, I cry all the time. I wanted to go back to work but now I am actually considering filing for DISABILITY - that should be interesting - since its hard enough for other people let alone me with migraines. its unreal - I get help - loose it -now I'm back where I started & no one seems to care.       If anyone has any info on a dr. who can really help in Ohio or Pa. - please let me know. I have even considered trying to get the demerol from 1 of the online pharmacies - overseas or other - but thats scarry, people get scammed , in trouble , etc. etc. - its pretty bad when you might consider these things just to get help.  If you have any info that might help me - a dr - a "safe" place to get Demerol or any direction i can go to get info - PLEASE let me know ASAP.    My Migraines again are ruining my life !!!   I can't be the only one in this position but I certainly feel like I am. I don't want this problem - never did. I don't want to take pain meds. I have tried so many diff. dr's - the Clev. clinic - all types of over the counter, natural/homeopathic & prescription meds and just about anything & everything you could possibly mention. And - of course there is even more than severe pain - depression - losing jobs - missing important events - hoping you have a supportive spouse - you know - on & on  - I'm sure many of you can relate.   Any info would be greatly appreciated !

I have a great pain management physician in Louisville, Ky. I am not sure how far that is from you, but you might want to check them out. It is called Metro Pain Associates.

Do you have copies of your medical records that document the medications you were taking?

Good luck!

That just totally rots!
I have a neurologist that told me that he doesn't deal with "pain"...HA! I am going to him for migraines...Maybe there's some pain involved there. eyes Like I am going just for fun. He told me the whole, "take motrin and tylenol" thing....ya sure. I cannot even take tylenol because it gives me anxiety.
Cracking down on pain meds. hurts the ones that need them. If I didn't have a chiropractor, I hate to say this, but I wouldn't be part of this earth anymore if I had to live in the "allowed" levels of pain...
I have an ovarian cyst on top of this and cannot afford to see a gyn. The only hope is Thurs night at the free clinic....BUT!!!!!! they don't prescribe narcotics, controlled substances or psych, I guess I just have to suffer more that I already have to with the migraines.
( end of my personal rant)
I am really sorry about the loss of your dr that seemed to know what he/she was doing.
I hope there's relief in sight for you. I "had" a dr. that sent me home with Morphine...Now that I moved, I can just give up if I need pain relief or go to the ER for temp. relief only to be told to follow up with "my" dr. HA !

Thanks so much for the reply !   I can relate to so much of what you wrote - Unbelievable about the neurologist - he should def. understand Migraine pain  !!!   At times I don't think anyone understand but US !!!
My family dr. is very understanding  (just saw him today) - lost the great pain mgt. dr - so had no choice but to ask the family dr. for some help atleast- like pain pills & Migranal Nasal spray - but he says his profile doesn't allow him to prescribe the demerol & that ohio is now very strict on Narcotics - even Pain mgt. dr's have a hard time writing Narcotics. Obviously whoever "they" is that made these new rules has never had a very severe migraine !!!  It seems that whoever "they" is love  to say 1 reason is "ADDICTION" . Well if they had ever experienced even 1 of my "really bad" migraines they wouldn't care about that. My family dr. said today that many  dr's have discussed that it seems true that people who really have a pain problem & need narcotics - do not get addicted - as opposed to someone who doesn't really have a pain prob. & doesn't truly need them. That sems to be true with me or atleast I  feel that way.  Demerol Injectable is very cheap - has been around forever & it seems to me that some in the medical profession make such a big deal about it. All I know is that it helps my really really bad Migraines & I wqsn't the one who thought it up in the beginning. Its like using a certain "say - Mascara" for years & then the manuf. stops making it - what a pain. Just like the Demerol - the Er's don't really want to give it (so I have heard)from my dr. & no one seemas to be able to prescribe it atleast here in Ohio or PA - not even the Pain Mgt. Dr's - and there aren't very many of those anymore ! Like there aren't people out there in serious pain. My family dr. says that the new drugs are combos of say a narcotic & m. relaxer and other things - you get the idea. I bet hey cost a lot more than a bottle of demerol & more side effects.
Sorry - i'm really going on & on. Its just that lately I'm very upset, outraged - etc. etc.
Did morphine help your migraines ??? It didn't help me at all at the ER.
I understand about the gyn - I do not have health ins. right now - its embarassing & not fun. I'm pretty sure that I am now going to try to get Disability - I can't work  I hate it - I'm not lazy - just in pain a lot of the time.  A few days ago a nurse told me about a dr. that she thought could help me - who knows - the consult is $220.00 & I'm not positive he can help but I'm going to try him. The last pain mgt. specialiost I tried a few months ago was (sorry - but) an idiot - no  help at all.  I must stop going on & on.
Again - Thanks for the Reply.   Hope you find some help also ! Some people may be "seeking drugs" but most of us are definitely NOT - Right !!!!
Thanks        Cathy

Hi, I know what you mean about having something that helps being taken's incredibly difficult to accept.  I have a friend that I met at the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago that had Demerol and Stadol injections prescribed for her to give herself.  I emailed her just a minute ago to ask who her doctor was, so hopefully I'll be able to give you his or her name soon.  Good luck until then! :)

Hello all Migraine suffering people.
I haven't posted here in so long. I have lived w/migraines since i was in high school long, long time ago.
Well, maybe not that long:)
I went to a pain clinic this one was in the S.Suburbs of Chicago land. There is also a pain clinic in Hinsdale Hosp. they will give you the right pain meds & try different ones if they dont work w/yu.
I was on Morphine patch, then 250mg of morphine pills.
about a yr. later i realized that im just going to have to keep on this med, & keep uping the doses. So i decided on my own to slowly stop all together.
Now  i take Tramadol for my migraines its a man-made non narc. If the pain is very bad my family doc is very nice & gives me 60T#3's & about 5 refills every time.
He justs asks if the pharmacy has a problem & they dont, w/him prescribing such a large amount & that many refills.
Since they dont, he doesn't & i do the best i can to use them sparingly.
I think if yu go to your doc, & really talk about how much it effects your daily living, he/she may just help yu or recomend a doc, who can.
I do know how much a migraine can turn your world upside down, im here for any of my migraine friends to talk.

I take topomax for migraine prevention, then imitrex for when I get a migraine and my head still feels like it's it going to explode. One day I ended up at a quick care and received 75mg of demerol and 25 of phenergan and it was the first total relief of a migraine I had ever had. Now several weeks later I have another killer migraine and out of desperation I took 2 vicodin I had left over from dental work with my imitrex and I got some relief. Yet my nero won't give me any pain medication for my migraines. I don't understand why it's so bad to perscibe pain meds for migraines if they are occasional and they provide relief.

What is a better pain med for migraines...darvocet, vicodin, codeine if I could get some from a doctor?? Oh, and I can't take any asprin or NSAID type products - they give my ulcers.

For me, codeine seems to work best. But it really depends on the individual person. Codeine tends to increase nausea in a lot of people. I would ask your doc if he/she could prescribe you some sample amounts of each med and try each of them on seperate occasions, that will give you an idea of which one would work best for you.

I think I am lucky, I have had migraines r/t periods but never knew, My grandma had them too,we just called them sinus headaches and would lose 2-3days a month with awful pain and nausea, sit in a dark room or in the shower withthe water running on your head or ice packs. Thank God, someone finally told me they are migraines. They are controlled with a beta blocker (inderal) and if I do get one I take Imitrex and it works, I'm so sorry you guys seem to have really severe headaches, I wish you luck finding relief. Toni

Hello Doghouse, sorry i missed your message for so long.
I dont understand why yu cant find a doc, to prescribe yu migraine meds.
I am like yu & because of my internal bleeding cannot take NSAIDS either.
Thats why my family doc, prescbs T#3 & Tramadol.
I hate Vicodine even though i know it contains codien which is the med, that works for me, though the non narc, Tramadol aka ultracet works just as well or better sometimes.
If your doc, wont prescb Tramadol for yu, id find a new doc honestly.
Migraines are debilitating i know infact today ive been down & out w/a migraine i took 3 Tramadols & im so much better. I havent even gone to the T#3's, & this was a bad migraine day.
I use to see pain docs, thats when i was on Morphine. Over kill for migraines (for me at least). So i stopped & just went to my family doc, after we made sure there wasnt a clot or anything causing the migraines he had no problem prescribing me meds.
I wish yu much luck & i will try to keep better track of those who write me.

Hello again Migraine friends,

There is one thing i forgot to mention that may help if yu can find the right SHRINK sorry no anger just attention getter.

I see a shrink as well, he has RX: Valium for me. Now here me out dont start w/the hate mail yet. nono

Whatever the pain anyone of us here is in lets all remember how r body works. If yu dont know why u get migraines i suggest try & find out.

My findings were 1. teeth grinding esp at night 2.anxiety 3. lack of sleep.4.poss, Fibromyalgia

Valium is a muscle relaxant so even though you all may think it wont work on migraines, think about whats causing them.

Since its mainly sore jaw muscles, ridgity of muscles due to anxiety & poor quality of sleep which ruins all your body parts & if i due have Fibro, thats a biggie there.

So why not try & talk to not ask for a muscle relaxant & it doesnt have to be Valium, very small doeses are required .5 millgrms thats is so much less than 4-6T#3/day.

Remember just talk about it at first, really let your doc, understand how much your pain is effecting your everyday life & yu very much would like to be there for this & that ect.

It may go much better than hey doc, im in pain what r u going to give me for it.

Just an example of myself before i learned to work w/not against my docs, & pharmasists dont forget the pharmacists they can & im sure some of you & i have been through.

I found accidentally when I took 1/2 a flexeril, muscle relaxant, for a hurt back one day that I had a migraine too that the next day my migraine was much better. So I think it's something to look into if your migraines are caused by weather changes that cause muscle tension/knots and tightness in your neck.

My neuro gave me valium for neck muscle spasms, which she said that was contributing to my tension headaches, which develop into migraines during the day.

DX: Migraines, Tension Headaches, PFO
RX:  Lyrica, Cymbalta, Verapamil, Migrelief
PRN: Zomig, Toradol, Dilaudid, Valium

have you tried Mepergan?? Its demerol and phenergan in a tablet.
I hate demerol when I have a migraine b/c it just makes it worse. I have to get something like Stadol or Nubain.
Have you ever had Stadol NS? My PCP prescribed it for me and it was just like getting a shot (usually I had at least one a month that would still require a shot)
Just a couple of options.
I have to include this, don't hate me, but is there any chance you could be having rebounds? My guess is you don't use the demoral often, but just a question.
Its first PM doc I went to prescribed me 30 fentanyl sucker a month....that was way too much. I took myself of of those, but boy did they help.
DX-Migraines:PCOS(should have seen this list before!!)
Meds; imitrex inj, stadol ns PRN severe h/a
 ProzAC 40mg, Klonopin 1mg BID , Ambien 10mg
PRN, Pherergan, Actiq 600mcg(fentanyl suckers) for migraine breakthrough pain
Doing engergy medicine!!!! Psych-K (look it up)
OFF ALL MEDS! AND DOING GREAT. still have h/a's but they aren't ruining my life anymore!
May God give you a reason to smile today, an extra reason to laugh, and bring joy to your soul.
