How many of you experience muscle twitches? Not just the occasional twitch but frequent twitching in the same muscle bundles. Is it a problem for anyone?

Hey Annie,

I have not had this.  That is not to say the it doesn't happen with MS though.  I did once have a transient eyelid twitch over a period of 4 months right after I was diagnosed.  It was one of those ones that drives you nuts but when you run to the mirror to see how bad it is, you can barely see it.  It just nearly made me crazy lol.  But I attributed it to stress and not MS.  For me, it went away without treatment.  There was no pain involved, just that weird twitching.

Are you in pain?? Does it feel tight or spastic?? Put it down in your journal.  When it started, where it is located, and how long it lasts.  Good luck.

Love and prayers,

G'day Gretchen,
I get twitches in about 5 different locations. The twitches are strong and deep and can be seen rippling in my shoulder muscle, also the fleshy muscle on the outside of the palm of my hand and one buttock. I get such strong muscle twitches in my forearms that on my left side it makes my pointer finger move rapidly from side to side and on the other side it moves my thumb, but only slightly. It is so weird. The twitching finger bothers me a bit (not painful) but it embarrasses me as it happens many times a day. When my left finger stops moving it always takes some time before I am able to willingly move it. It sort of freezes on me!
Just comparing notes here. Thanks for responding.

Annie,

Ive had the twitches in the shoulder/upper back area and pretty strong also. Once our car was stalled and the heat came through and i could visibly see a leg muscle bounce(twitch).

Ive also had some (aches) not sure if they were twitches in the buttocks.

I've def had the eye twitch and even the lip twicth, these are all painless and seem to just be reminders of "hey im here" (as if i didnt know).

As for the hand, imagine reaching up and turning up or down a thermostat, when i do this my thumb will collapse. I told my neuro this and he says yes, its muscles.

We really have to understand that it affects people so differently that one may not have a twitch while others have many. Your's seems to be a bit more than mine but im still twitching with you ! So...your not alone in this.
My finger (middle) will tend to try and come down (draw) and touch my palm. I find this happens like with the thermostat, Intention ? Almost like how intention tremors are when you are trying to intentionally perform a task. Biting my nails is now a thing of the past lol.

Your's sounds very strong to be so visible, have you noted if your in the heat or overheated inside when they are more visible? The buttcheek is one im glad that YOU mentioned, as ive yet to see anyone bring it up. Afterall its a muscle and therefore not discluded in alot of people.

Id take Gretchen's advice and jot these down to hand a copy to neuro. Alot of these places that twitch in the body tend to be places spasticity shows up more frequently in. The face twitches seem to act more benign and as she pointed out they feel bigger than they look.

Your not alone!

thanks

Hey Kiera,
Thanks for responding. The twitches seem to happen mostly after i have used the muscle group. For example, with the left finger, which is the one that plays up all the time, it happens after I have used a fork (pressing down on to it) or carried shopping bags in that hand and a thousand other actions like that. Could this be intention tremor? It twitches after use, not necessarily as I am going to use it. I have also had one episode of my face twitching. In fact it only happened a few days ago. I'm not sure if heat exacerbates all of this. I live in a very hot climate (Queensland, Australia) and heat is just the norm. I haven't really felt the effects of hot showers etc like many others have. Anyway, my kids have recorded these twitches on their phones, so next dr's visit, I will show them. They are quite interesting.
