Hi, I need some help,

My aunt has MS and takes a once a week injection (I think it's Avonex) and has been for a very long time, she is now 4 weeks pregnant and only stopped taking it about a week or 2 ago.

What effects could this medication have on the baby?

Hi Carly,

First of all, congrats to your aunt! Has your aunt discussed this early exposure with her neuro? Another place to try would be the support people for avonex…she should have a number to call when she has questions about her med.

It looks like avonex is a pregnancy category C drug, which basically means they haven’t really studied the risks. You might try googling “avonex in early pregnancy,” or something like that. When I poked around a bit using the search terms above, I found reference to an observational clinical trial studying exposure in pregnancy. It’s not yet complete though. Here is another bit of info I found while searching:

Hopefully someone else can provide you with a little more info J

Hey Carly

Wow...Sunny has done a GREAT job in answering u'r question!! I can't add anything to her answer but to say u'r aunt should really be talking to her doc about this! Given what Sunny posted, that not much is known, she needs to be asking lots of questions of both her ob and neuro. The two docs should be in a position to discuss her situation between themselves as well. Its so nice to see u posting on behalf of u'r aunt. What a great advocate u are! Please do invite her to post here as well! Take good care and let us know what the doc says about this.

I have asked this of my neuro just recently. They don't know a lot about avonex and babies. He thinks it is safe while pregnant. The thing that avonex can do is cause a miscarriage in early pregnancy. So if you don't lose the baby early on they have seen no real harm to the fetus. It only stays in your system for a week and then it is gone. Interferon is somehting we produce normally. I think stopping is the right thing and I think that if she carries on the way she is the baby will be fine. Just stop taking all meds and get on prenatals and she should be fine.
