I am a 28 year old woman living with MS (diagnosed when I was 23). As do many people with MS, I suffer from MAJOR problems with my digestive system. It is hard to pinpoint what is the fault of the MS and what isn't, however the docs are pretty sure the MS is causing my severe constipation. I have been diagnosed with severe slow transit chronic constipation, and my team of doctors are recommending a subtotal colectomy.

My question is in regards to this procedure & MS- has anyone out there had this procedure and suffered ill effects from their MS b/c of it? Am still trying to make a decision and am overwhelmed by the seriousness of the surgery and the implications it can have for the rest of my life. Although I don't want to live like this anymore (BMs once every 1-2 weeks), I also don't want to embark on a serious surgery w/out knowing what I am going to deal with afterwards.

Thanks, any input would be appreciated.

Hi menziesgal,

I am so sorry you are dealing with this and trying to make such a difficult decision. My mother (who also had MS) had a lifetime of awful constipation but I am lucky and can control my bowel with lots of fruit.

A decision to have any surgery is not one you can take lightly, I know. I had a baclofen pump put in last year and it gave me back my life but it does mean I have to have surgeries every 6 years for the rest of my life.

If you type "constipation and subtotal colectomy" into the box at the top right of the page (under the Join healing Well box) and click on search you will find a lot of posts from others with the same problem.

Hope you find some helpful suggestions there.

Love & light
Have had relapsing/remitting MS since 10 yrs old. Secondary/progressive since 1995. Baclofen pump since 2008.
