Just a thought....you may have had a migraine. You can have optical effects (auras) with migraines and you can even have just the aura with no pain. The first time it happened to me I had the same reaction you did....I saw an opthalmologist and he just laughed and said it was a migraine aura.
Of course you should get checked out by a doctor and I'm glad you're planning to see one. I do hope it's something benign!
