Hello everyone I am new to this site. I will give you as brief a history as I can. New at this. But have been reading some of your posts and I think someone heare might be able to give me some info. My Mother was diagnosed with MS in 1978. She is now 80 yrs old and uses an electric scooter, many years since she was able to walk. She has always been in good health and when I say that I mean she has no other issues.
In Feb she showed signs of not being able to keep herself up right in her chair, motor function in arms were impaired and within an hour she was repeating her self, one phrase over and over. The next morning she was still repeating same phrase. Still weak and temp of 91. She was taken to hospital where they warmed her up, started fluids and eventually discovered UTI. They then started cipro thru IV. The next day Nuroligist said it was MS episode so he ordered Steroid IV. My mother had not had a steroid in 15 yrs if ever. She went out of her head crazy. I made them stop. As soon as she new where she was we took her home and was being treated for UTI with Oral Cipro 500 mg. twice a day. This was for 7 days. She got much better almost all the way back.
4 days later symptoms started again. Tried to get help from Dr and Interium health so she would not be back in Hospital well that did not happen had to take her to emergency room. 2 days there started Cipro again. Came home in 2 days with 7days of oral cipro. She actually got so much better she was back almost 100%. 2 days after stoping Cipro symptoms started again. Same showed she still had UTI. Tried yo get DR to give us more Cipro or something. Like pulling teeth. Finally gave us 250 mg Cipro twice a day. and a referral to urologist, I insisted.
Well needless to say 2 days before appointment with urologist she got worse so she is back in Hospital. Still has UTI but new DR in Hospital think she is having MS episoide so here we go again. I have read that UTI in older people can present with the same symptoms my mother has. Am I wrong to want them to focus on this infection, get her back stable and then we can go from there? Any comments are welcome
